“Now that we free / Who we gonna be?” 🪽✨

Last weekend, audiences joined us in the LAB for a special first glimpse of Jubilee.

Replete with dancing bears and bags of luck, and set on the day after the Emancipation Proclamation, Jubilee joyfully asks: what might the world become when all people are truly free?

Inspired by Scott Joplin’s 1910 ragtime opera Treemonisha, Jubilee is a musical in the making by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks—a magical, hilarious, and timely fable about a young woman who leads her community into a new way of being.

Directed by Steve H. Broadnax III, this work-in-progress staged reading of Suzan-Lori Parks’s libretto gave audiences a rare look into the development of a major new musical—one the Fisher Center is proud to premiere as a full production in the near future.

Jubilee is the first of Fisher Center LAB’s Civis Hope Commissions, an endowed fund supporting major new works in the performing arts that explore the subject of hope.
