Standing with me in the first photo is Madeline Fenton, the first Debra Martin Chase Professor of Film, Television and Theatre at my alma mater, @mtholyoke college. Funded by an incredibly generous anonymous donor, this Chair is one of the greatest honors of my life. I am told that it is one of a very few endowed chairs in the country named after a living Black woman. I will soon be joined by my fellow alum, a Tony winner who was the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, @suzanloriparks365. This same transformative donor is also funding the Suzan-Lori Parks Chair of Writing at the College. I met Madeline for the first time on Thursday. Not only is she from Southern California and earned her Ph.D at UC Santa Barbara, but her mother-in-law received an Emmy Award in Art Direction on @rodgers&hammersteins'scinderella! A small world! College President @daniellerholley, a fellow @harvardlaw alum and the former dean of the @howard1867 law school, is doing a terrific job with great vision for the wellbeing and future of the institution. Our ceremony was part of her #ForeverUncommon weekend which was focused on a new historic capital campaign. And we had a couple of gorgeous New England fall days. The last photo is of my dorm sophomore year. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Yes we caught the LAST weekend of #pulitzerwinner @suzanloriparks365 Topdog/Underdog @peopleslight 🔥🔥🔥🔥
First, If you want to catch the seasons change, take that ride to Malvern, you will feel Fall🍂🎃🍎🍁🌰
It was glorious.
But BayBee, @aminarobinson is the director that keeps on giving. Watching Akeem Davis(Lincoln) & George McGiff(Booth) as two brothers trying to survive in a world that is really just the two of them in Many Ways is just heart-wrenching and complicated and endearing all at the same time. And it was Fantastic! This Set is Amazing. Loved the costumes. Where it was never said you totally pick up the #Philly connection and possible location. From the red PAINTED brink & house awning down to the ankle Calvin Klein white socks. They did that. This was a great place for this show to begin this duo's journey. While it has ended in Malvern this co-production is heading to Philly's @ardentheatreco starting 10/29. https://ardentheatre.org Yassss!! Akeem & George gonna give it to you. Brothers beware.✊🏾🫶🏿🫰🏽

#PeoplesLightTheatre get it right on & off stage. The Arts & Community at its best. With some of the best energy right outside of Philly. They are just beginning rehearsals for Cinderella: A Musical Panto.
(Nov 18th-Jan 3rd) We even got to say hello to some familiar faces. Check them Out!!! #supportregionaltheatre #SupportTheArts

OH MY GOSH I am FINALLY done with the embroidery on my bookshelf sweater. A bit more work now to put it all together but I am so glad to be done with the embroidery!

The back is adult books, plus a bottom shelf of more middle grade, which could not be contained to one sleeve, and a side panel of plays.

Now to construct it into a sweater!

Roy and John’s adventures in #Chicago continue … A matinee of “Topdog/Underdog” at @steppenwolfthtr … a blistering, challenging indictment of the American dream as it curdles poignantly, comically, ultimately tragically around brothers “Lincoln” (a powerhouse Glenn Davis) and “Booth” (a winsome, heartbreaking Namir Smallwood). The same production team that led the recent #Broadway revival of @suzanloriparks365 Pulitzer Prize-winning seminal work to a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play, headed by legendary director @iamkennyleon, brings their magic touch to this timely, essential production at #Steppenwolf. (Oh, and we revisited @willowroomchicago for another fabulous brunch beforehand!) #theatre @thetonyawards

Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks brings Lincoln and Booth, two brothers with complicated histories, into a tense and darkly funny game of cards, cons, and brotherly rivalry. First performed at Steppenwolf Theatre in 2003, this Pulitzer Prize-winning play continues to ask what happens when family, identity, and survival are all on the line.

The performances bring plenty of tension, humor, and complexity to the table, and these two actors Glenn Davis and Namir Smallwood definitely know how to play their cards right.

Topdog/Underdog is a sharp, compelling two-hander that keeps you guessing until the very end.

Thank you for having me at opening night @steppenwolfthtr

What does it mean to truly sit with yourself?

Following a powerful performance of America, Who Hurt You?, @yesimsarahjones, @lavernecox, and @suzanloriparks365 gathered for a conversation about humor, history, hope, and the journey of understanding our own stories.

At National Black Theatre and @theatreforanewa , we believe the experience does not end when the performance ends. Sometimes, that is where the conversation truly begins.

Only 4 performances left and limited tickets available! Secure your spot now! Link in Bio!

Director @iamkennyleon calls @suzanloriparks365's "Topdog/Underdog" a love story.

A love story between brothers. A love story to African Americans. And, perhaps most provocatively, a love story to America.

Four years after directing the play on Broadway, Leon returns to it at @steppenwolfthtr with Glenn Davis and Namir Smallwood as Lincoln and Booth.

We talked about what these actors reveal in Parks’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, finding joy until the final moments and why Leon believes its message is more urgent today.

My new conversation with Kenny Leon is up at Cultural Attaché.

Broadway director Steve H. Broadnax III returns to the Globe after last season’s thrilling Appropriate to direct an intimate new staging of Suzan-Lori Parks’s Pulitzer Prize–winning modern classic, which The New York Times hailed as the greatest American play of the past 25 years.

Brothers Lincoln and Booth hustle for survival through the street con game of three-card monte.

Their bond is tested by rivalry, resentment, and the elusive promise of the American Dream.

By turns funny, provocative, and charged, Topdog/Underdog charts the razor-thin line between ambition and self-destruction.
