Just a reminder that it is ok to take a break from the onslaught of war, violence against women, immigrants, children, minorities, the Earth, our food, animals—the list goes on.

I’ve been making a conscious effort to spend more time outside and reading, writing, and cooking.

Stevie Nicks Stand Back just arrived so if you live on the westside, YES, that is me you hear singing.

What music makes you sing so loud neighbors can hear?

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Preserve with my dad and @tonigibran. ❤️

I entered the park feeling a little tired and headachey and left feeling the zen-est zen.

Walking among 1,000 year old tees is such a calming, beautiful treat. The experience never gets old. (Pun intended!)

I am thrilled to announce that my novel, All the Moments in Between, will be published by @sibyllinepress in Fall 2027!

In All the Moments in Between, Kate Edison thought she’d finally gotten everything she wanted; a job she loved as a Hollywood set decorator, a fiancé who adored her, and the perfect California Craftsman for the two of them to renovate together. But when Kate discovered she was pregnant, she was also diagnosed with estrogen driven cancer, forcing her to make an unbearable choice between her life and her baby’s. When she chose herself, her fiancé ghosted and left her alone in the empty run-down house.

To deal with her abusive childhood, cancer, and grief, Kate uses the only coping skills she knows —booze and an affair with a married man—until a leaky roof in a never ending LA rainy season forces her to ask a set carpenter to help fix her neglected home. As they scrape, sand, and restore together, Kate slowly works through loss and love and as a result, renovates herself.

Also, the stories behind the story are pretty wild, so I’ll be sharing some of them during the lead up to launch.

Will you come along for the ride? ❤️

I planted a tiny urban garden in what was the ugliest cinder blocked space behind my house. Every morning, before switching on the WiFi or looking at my phone, I got outside, talk to my green friends and water them.

It’s such a lovely way to start my day.

I’m not so sure if my zucchini plant will ever produce a zucchini, but it sure is fun trying. Here’s what I planted:

Basil
Parsley
Echinacea
Rosemary
Lavender
Zucchini
Bell peppers
Jalapeños
Sun gold cherry tomatoes (Mommy’s fav)
Cucumbers
Marigolds
Geranium

Do you have a garden? If so, what are you growing?

I recently went to The Hospital of Emotions in Downtown LA where artists turned hospital rooms into exhibits across “departments,” such as the Department of Joy, the Department of Hope, the Department of Anger, and the Department of Sadness. In the Department of Sadness, I was deeply moved by this installation by artist Alex Kemp.

Room 33’s description read: “Despite broadening awareness of mental health and the impact neurodivergence has on our society, we still don’t know much about the brain. When something goes wrong among its 100 trillion synapses, we expect the patient to diagnose, navigate, and execute their own treatment, unlike any other ailment or injury, when it comes to the brain the patient is the healer.”

When I was sick with Chronic Lyme Disease, suffering from massive brain fog, what I called “Bowling Ball Head,” daily fevers, insatiable thirst, and chronic kidney, urinary, and fungal infections, I had to become a detective. When I look at all the papers on these walls, they represent the research I did to connect toxic mold poisoning to Lyme Disease. Like this patient’s bedside table, mine was covered with Medical Medium books and books like The Body Keeps the Score, You Can Heal Your Life, and The Healing Codes.

On the days I could sit up at the computer and actually see straight, I read and read, trying to figure out what was happening to me while doctors kept telling me, “Your tests came back fine,” and “You look good!” while most of my hair had fallen out, my tongue was white and furry, and my big toenails had fallen off.

Being ill is horrible enough. Having to research, advocate, and heal yourself is just plain wrong.

We can and we must do better.

My mom died in October and she’s given me a lot of signs, but the last week has been very quiet and I’ve been sick and griefy. So today, I said aloud, “Mommy, send me a sign that you’re with me.”

A few minutes later, I walked outside and a U-Haul backed up, blocking the sidewalk in front of me, with this on the side.

I live in Los Angeles. My mom lived on a mountain in Vermont where she had several pieces of folk art featuring Champ.

I’d say that’s a sign.

Sounds from The Porch

Ticktickticktick bicycle spokes whiz by
As seagulls squawk
Trilling, chirping messages fly across blue skies
A food delivery robot clunkity clunkclunk clunks over sidewalks uprooted by old trees
Palm leaves pat pat swish swish in the breeze

Last weekend, after arriving at the Wisdom and Words retreat, @darcey_gohring_writer asked why we were there.

I wrote down, “I’m here to come home to writing.”

My last few years have been filled with grief, loss, and constant worry that made the idea of writing laughable. (It’s impossible to focus on verb choice when the people you love are dying.)

If there’s one upside to death, it’s that I don’t have to worry about, or care for, my stepdad or my mom anymore. While my chest still feels like cement and I cry every time I see a picture of them or catch myself saying something my mom might say, I have a weird new freedom now.

That freedom led me to Maine for the @wisdomandwordswriters writing retreat where the brilliant @joannarakoff inspired me to cut someone from my memoir because “Dave doesn’t need a shower!” (If your name is Dave, do not fear, you weren’t in my memoir–that was writing advice about one of Joanna’s characters.)

I also reunited with my first writing professor, Andre Dubus III, who taught a workshop on Saturday. As I sat among the writers trying to describe the smell of sex, (And you thought writing retreats were boring!) it hit me that two days before, I wanted to “come home to writing” and there I was, with my first writing teacher, starting all over again.

As if that weren’t enough, because I signed up late, I got to stay at the @thewaterfordinne down the road from the other attendees. If I could give it 10 stars, I would! I live in LA, so Maine is like another planet to me, but the Waterford Inne was a magical escape, complete with an enchanting orchestra of bullfrogs, owls, and chickens. I even got to experience a thunderstorm! (That alone is worth 5 stars for this LA Woman!)

My mom collected antiques and she would’ve loved the gorgeous decor. Farm fresh breakfasts (eggs straight from the cluck section of the enchanting orchestra) were served in the spectacular barn of wood walls and giant beams that was somehow huge and cozy at the same time. If I didn’t have a retreat to go to, I could have stayed there all day.

Thank you to Darcey, Joanna, Andre, and all the wonderful writers who made last weeken by @suzanne.casamento
