🫍🇻🇨 Photos taken by the Barrouallie whalers who have volunteered to stop hunting orcas in St.Vincent & the Grenadines

Images taken and shared by the Barrouallie whalers while hunting at sea on the 8th of October 2026 show a pod of orcas travelling along the west coast of St.Vincent and the Grenadines. The orcas have been travelling through our waters for several days, and a wonderful sight to see. The whalers took time out of their hunts to take these photographs to share with us all.

Since January 16th of 2025, the Barrouallie whalers volunteered to stop hunting orcas in exchange for supporting alternative livelihoods for tuna fishing through the deployment of artisanal FADs. This agreement was signed between the SVGEF and the Barrouallie whalers in support of our partners and local government authorities. Many pods of orcas like these have since been in our waters, all of which passed through safely.

We would like to thank the whalers for their commitment to this collaboration, and we acknowledge the significance of protecting the orcas as it relates to their livelihoods. And a special thank you to them for taking these photos and sharing with us all. taken in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines by @svgef

In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Conch has long been an important part of coastal life, valued both as a traditional food source and as a contributor to local livelihoods through fishing and export. But decades of overharvesting have taken a serious toll on conch populations across the Grenadines, with stocks declining faster than they can naturally replenish. Conch are slow to mature and reproduce, making them especially vulnerable to sustained fishing pressure, and unregulated or out-of-season harvesting has pushed some local populations toward depletion.

In response, the SVG Ministry of Fisheries, through the partnership of local fisherfolk, @svgef and @bluemarinefoundation , has introduced measures such as closed seasons to give conch populations time to spawn and recover, alongside broader efforts to monitor stocks through underwater dive surveys and promote sustainable fishing practices through community consultations with fisherfolk. These protections are critical not just for the health of marine ecosystems, where conch help maintain balanced seagrass and algae growth, but also for the long-term resilience of the fishing communities who rely on this resource.

🐢Leatherback sea turtles nest on the shores of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, typically from March through July, and one of the most popular beaches for nesting leatherbacks in SVG is Big Sands, Sandy Bay, where females return year after year during the nesting season to lay their eggs.

The SVGEF Sea Turtle Project, in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries, protects these nests by empowering members of the Sandy Bay community to document nesting activity as leatherbacks come ashore, protect nests as they incubate while monitoring for threats, and conduct nest excavations once hatchlings have emerged.

Here we see members of our Sandy Bay turtle team working together to ensure these leatherback hatchlings are given the best possible chance to begin their journey to the sea as they were found remaining in the nest during an excavation.

This #SeaTurtleWeek, not only do we celebrate the sea turtles, but we also celebrate our monitors, partners and local communities who continue to protect sea turtles every day.

This project is made possible thanks to the @conservationcollectiveorg x @edmistonyachts partnership.

Thank you to everyone who makes this work possible 💙 taken in St. Vincent and the Grenadines by @svgef

Celebrating World Sailing Day today and throwback Thursday taking us back to reminisce on last month’s Sailing module for YOA !!🌍⛵️

Sailing returns as our first module for our Youth Ocean Academy 2026, a favourite among last year’s Ocean Guardians. As the most sustainable form of travel across our islands, while building water confidence and practical skills for conservation, we were happy to partner again with the SVG Sailing Association @vincysailing to lead the session. The morning started with in depth sailing theory, and by noon our Ocean Guardians were out on the water putting their new found skills to the test. The focus of the day was mastering wind directions, practicing safety basics, and getting real, hands-on helming experience on the water. Hands down the best way to kick off the programme. The vibes were unmatched and everyone sailed smoothly with just a few small capsizes but with even bigger smiles.

Slide through to see the crew in action. We would also like to thank @coconutgrovesvg for hosting us at their lovely venue truly providing just the right atmosphere and a wonderful open door classroom by the sea for our students.

Looking forward to our next module!

Congratulations @svgef - Highly Commended for People’s Choice in The Collectives Awards 2026 🙌

Team SVGEF were recognised by their peers across the network as valued collaborators, capacity builders, and role models.
They’ve shared the tough lessons they’ve learned about working in small island states — where capacity is thin, distances are long, and every donor conversation matters.

Thank you for your valued contribution Stephan and Lisa! ✨ taken in St. Vincent and the Grenadines by @svgef

Daytime Leatherback Nesting on Colonaire (Gorse) Beach, St. Vincent 🐢🥚

On April 26th 2026 at around midday, the coastal community of Gorse was greeted by a leatherback making her way up the beach to nest.

Leatherbacks are the largest sea turtles in the world and typically come ashore under the cover of night during their nesting season making this daytime encounter a special one. It was the very first time seeing a leatherback for some watching on and members of the nearby community stood in awe as the process unfolded.

A special shoutout to our monitor Maria who quickly recognised the significance of the moment and requested additional support to help ensure the safety of the turtle and her eggs. Thanks to her quick actions and coordination our team of nearby monitors was able to respond and maintain a respectful and disturbance-free environment with a crowd of 30+ persons all watching, allowing her to nest without interruption and return safely to the sea.

With the eggs safely laid, our team will continue to monitor and protect the nest in the weeks ahead where we are hopeful that they will successfully hatch.

Moments like this are a powerful reminder of the importance of community-based conservation and the role our monitors play in protecting the sea turtles of SVG. Thank you so much to all involved 🐢💙

We are now live! ⏰From today, all donations to @conservationcollectiveorg will be matched via biggive Earth Raise. Head over to the link in bio today until 29th April to support CC’s work protecting and restoring nature at the grassroots.

Since 2020, Conservation Collective has launched, supported, and grown 20+ locally rooted Foundations, each mobilising resources to support effective, frontline nature restoration initiatives. Together we’ve raised over £22 million across our global network, supporting 700+ projects across the UK, Mediterranean, Caribbean and Indian Ocean.

Conservation Collective’s core approach is at the heart of this progress: bringing in new donors, sharing best practices, and amplifying impact across the network. Sadly, unrestricted core funding is among the hardest to secure—yet it’s what makes everything else possible. That’s why we’re taking part in Earth Raise 2026 to help us maintain the resilience our work demands.
