Something Real Some fish for food, some fish for attention. I fish to feel. Cool breeze in your face. Crusty barnacles crunching below your feet. The backsplash of waves rolling down your neck. Earlier today @swamoffstrong posted a photo of signs that are being put up around the area which is awesome. These signs are to educate or encourage proper fish handling techniques. I also shared some photos of @biteback_fishing and @ties.by.ty who have been having a productive spring with my plugs but also portray proper fish handling in their photos. They either keep the fish in the water or quickly bring it out for a quick photo. The good ole days? We're living them... I'm sure you've seen the Young of Year data coming from the Chesapeake, and if you haven't you must be living under a rock (or perhaps on the rocks). The future is not looking bright, but as disheartening as it is, this is the reality we are faced with. Did it really take the second worst spawn in recorded history for you to wake up? You can bitch and moan about fisheries management all you want, but we have put ourselves into this situation... It's simply a matter of "control what you can control". The ASFMC has proven time and time again their incompitence. Stop waiting on them to make the move. Take matters into your own hands. Stop harvesting striped bass. Quit weighing bass for some bragging rights. KEEP FISH WET! Stop trying to shift the blame onto other groups and take some responibility for something you love. Its not soley the commercial quotas, nor recreational release mortality. Are these things to blame? Surely. But there are thousands of factors that have influenced the state of the fishery that we have no control over. They may ask public input, but realistically we have no influence over the decisions the commission makes. However, we in fact have direct control over our own decisions. Three years now I have been pleading with this community to treat fish with respect, and take pride in your handling. Look where we are. Sadly, I've made enemies spreading this message, but as many people as I've pissed off, I've converted double the amount to C&R. I'm not perfect and I've made mistakes, but its now more important than ever, strive for improvement. Take a long look in the mirror this offseason and ask yourself if you are really doing everything you can to ensure a sustainable fishery. You may think, "I'm just one person it doesnt matter". Well I can tell you for 100% fact that it does matter. With spawning data like what we are seeing, every single fish matters. If you've seen the data but refuse to acknowledge it and make change; I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you are the issue. Between poaching canal jiggers and pompous party boats, these fish don't stand a chance. Unless YOU do YOUR part. by @swamoffstrong

The equation of surf fishing is not an easy one to solve. There is no formula, and there are hundreds, maybe thousands of varibles to consider that will influence success. Simplification, is neccessary, in order to see the bigger picture. Look at things from a different angle. For example, Blurple vs. Solid Black is a negligible difference that on average likely has little to no effect on your catch rate. Don't let the simplification, though, distract you from how complex the calculations can be. That minor change from solid color, to two-tone could make all the difference in feeling like a genius, or coming up just a fraction short. Better yet, the slightest deviatons in weight, can completely change your presentation, but you'll never know without experimentation. Trying to solve the surfcasting equation will break you. Crunching the numbers will push you to your limits, and make you question your sanity. Few things are more discouraging than thinking you've cracked the code, but upon checking your work you couldn't be more wrong. Probability suggests that you'll fail, much more than you'll succeed. Just when you think you are onto something, a minor variable changes, resulting in drastically different solutions. The more you attempt to solve the equation the more stumped you will get, but that's the fun in it all. Success is meaningless without failure. You'll begin to find that it actually isn't an equation at all, and the essence of surfcasting is much more comparable to a puzzle.
