Metallica weekend in Philly. 2 nights and no repeated songs. Couldn’t pass it up. The scale was epic and the sound was probably the best I’ve ever heard at a live event. The linc has 67,000 capacity not including the floor and it was sold out. Somehow it still seemed intimate with the circle stage. taken in Lincoln Financial Philadelphia Eagles Stadium by @swasserman

Ukraine - Family Roots, the last post in the thread
In 1881 Jews were blamed for the assassination of Tsar Alexander II (this seems unlikely given Tsar Alexander II’s support of abolishing anti-semitic laws and eduction restrictions for Jews). Afterwards there were waves of anti-semitic violence and restrictions and the by 1897 Russian census the Pale of Settlement (google it) contained (concentrated) 94% of the Russian Empire’s Jewish population. Consequently in 1897 my Great-Grandfather Benjamin Clement Coverman left Kyiv (I know it would have been Kiev) with his family which I would assume was to find in a safer place for his children to grow up. He settled in Philadelphia. There’s two things I want to convey here. The obvious one is that I have Ukrainian blood. But also ask that you stop and think about immigration in the US and how little time has passed since your ancestors came here to find a better life. We’re all connected no matter what the politics du jour try to tell us. Deport the violent criminals, no argument, but have some empathy towards families that settled here trying to find a better life and seek legal citizenship. taken in Kyiv, Ukraine by @swasserman

Ukraine - Street Art (Continuing the thread)
If you know me you know I photograph street art literally everywhere I go. Most times annoying TF out of those that are with me. Kyiv is one of the best places on the planet (IMHO) to check out street art. It’s everywhere. Literally everywhere. Probably sounds corny but I’m drawn to street art because it offers broad social commentary, celebrates local culture and most times challenges the observer. The art I saw here perfectly embodies that. I have at least a 100 photos but narrowed them down to this set. Slava Ukraini! taken in Kyiv, Ukraine by @swasserman

Ukraine - Murals (Continuing the thread)
Kyiv gives Philly (and other cities) a run for their money when it comes to murals. They were incredibly impactful to see in person. These murals are a great example of using art to express and advocate for social change. The following is just a small glimpse of what I saw. The first one is my absolute favorite and has been on the lock screen of my iPad since I took the photo. Slava Ukraini! taken in Kyiv, Ukraine by @swasserman

Ukraine - Public Art Installations (Continuing the thread)
I was blown away on my trip to Kyiv by the vibrance and diversity of the public art installations. Art is a mirror of cultural values, beliefs and experiences. I’ve wanted to bring the family to see, with their own eyes, how amazing these works are. Unfortunately the war has prevented that from happening. The following is just a small glimpse of what I saw. Ukraine - Memorials, Art and Architecture (Continuing the thread)
Of all the places I got to visit in Ukraine the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide stands out. To me it was the perfect example of Ukraine's memorial, art and architectural expression merged together to create an indelible experience. The moment I walked into this area I was viscerally moved by its equal amount of beauty and sadness. Inside is a memorial about the artificial famine with books that have the names of 882,510 of the 7-10 Million people that perished. Speechless. Additionally, The Kyiv War museum was overwhelmingly epic in its scale and impact and these photos don’t do it justice. The Motherland Monument is there and it’s just f*cking gorgeous. I’m including a few additional photos to give a flavor for some of Kyiv’s architecture including an an example of one of the iconic Brutalist buildings. Ukraine deserves support to keep this unique expression alive. Slava Ukraini!

I’ve worked shoulder to shoulder for the last 9 years with a team of smart, funny and thoughtful humans in Ukraine. At this point I consider them extended family. I’ve visited there, they’ve visited here and we talk often. We’re strikingly similar. When we see news about a war in a foreign country we sometimes don’t get a sense of how it impacts people lives and their families. I’ve been on calls where air raid sirens went off and people had to take shelter, I’ve seen ring camera footage of missile strikes, I’ve seen families separated. One thing that’s clear is that Ukraine people are bad*ss! What they endured for the last 3 years, while still providing for their families and keeping them safe, has won my eternal admiration. My hope this week, in a series of posts, is to show why I think of Ukraine as “us” and not “them”. Slava Ukraini! taken in Ukraine by @swasserman
