It’s the finer details within that placement that change — adapting to each individual’s natural features, hair density, and existing colour to create a result that’s completely customised to them.

It’s the finer details within that placement that change — adapting to each individual’s natural features, hair density, and existing colour to create a result that’s completely customised to them.

Tip-out placement is all about connection.

I position my tip-outs highest towards the front, gradually cascading down to the longest point of the hair.

This creates a visible connection through the face frame, following the natural features — from the part line to the brow, eye, cheek, jaw and finally the longest point.

Every placement is intentional, creating brightness that flows seamlessly rather than sitting in disconnected sections.

My control section is where I create connection and control contrast.

Once I’ve completed the face frame and connected the back to the front, I’m left with a triangular section on top, sitting between the end of the face frame and just below the crown.

This is my control section. It allows me to create another connection point between the front and back, while giving me the flexibility to increase or soften contrast and dimension without compromising the overall placement strategy.

Head positioning is everything when it comes to tip-outs.

One of the most common mistakes I see is tilting the client’s head forward during placement.

Instead, tilt the head back. This allows you to position your tip-outs highest on the side closest to the face, gradually cascading down towards the longest point.

It’s a small adjustment that makes a huge difference in creating intentional placement, seamless connection and visible brightness through the front.

Remove your tip-outs and brush out your teases on dry hair before rinsing.

Once the lightener has finished processing, I remove my tip-outs and wipe away the excess lightener while the hair is still dry.
