So excited about this new purchase from an amazing artist @caleightaylorartist - who combines whimsical characters with deep symbolism, to create an image where death and decay are present, but beauty and new life persevere. by @swtintle

So grateful for the ETC team who welcomed me, learned from me, taught me, and made me feel so welcome! Working in Sierra Leone is full of so many challenges and these amazing people face them everyday with grace, courage, and confidence. #worldhopeinternational #disabilityawareness #disabilityinclusion by @swtintle

I had a great tour of Freetown today! Sierra Leone has so much history- colonial houses and segregated night clubs. Mountains (without lions- despite the name!), and British cemeteries. 150 year old public schools next to slums. Coconuts- fresh on the side of the road. Abolitionists. Churches that are steps away from the place where slaves were chained before they were shipped to the Americas. A complex and beautiful country- I am honored to spend a few weeks here! by @swtintle

This is the Cotton tree of Sierra Leone. It is the location where the first freed, enslaved people returned from America and declared the town of Freetown. This tree has witnessed the slave trade, colonization, the civil war, Ebola, Covid, and all of the other atrocities visited on the Salone people. And it has stood as an emblem of their resilience and determination. A few years ago, the tree finally broke. Years of neglect and mismanagement allowed the inside to rot, and to break. But on the broken limbs, you can now see tiny green sprouts - rebirth. The tree is a symbol of this country- it needs care and proper management just like everyone else- but even when that is denied, there is perseverance and there is hope. by @swtintle
