“Imagine an old educational Rhodes classroom keyboard combined with the Death Star command center from Star Wars. That’s what I want for Studio A.”

This was hard to imagine for everyone who wasn’t our Head of Music @syblyng, but it’s the vision that guided the transformation of the 1980s trident T24 console that once lived in a CBS Studios building in Ohio. Here’s a glimpse into the transformation process.

The studios were conceived as the warmest environment within the project, with a heavy influence from Space Age. It was designed to support creativity without dictating it. Rather than asserting mood, the space is structured to recede, allowing artists to remain unaware of its influence while benefiting from its effects. The approach prioritizes transition and release: entry occurs through an arched threshold washed in a controlled, otherworldly light, immediately met by an infinity mirror that gently confronts you with yourself—your many selves—before you step inside. A quiet, repeating water sound and a deliberately lowered ceiling height define the approach corridor, where warm, dim water-ripple panels establish a cleansing of the outside world. Upon arrival at the studio proper, the space expands — ceilings lift, large windows introduce abundant natural light, and the sense of spatial release becomes physical. Everywhere two planes meet, there is carved in cove lighting— not just as design, but as a reminder that inspiration refuses to be contained by four walls or a ceiling. This interior was conceived as a study in presence, mass, and restraint, drawing from Brutalist, Post-Modern, and Space Age design principles to establish an environment that asserts power without excess. Existing conditions were preserved as architectural artifacts — decaying brick, exposed structure, and raw concrete — while new interventions were introduced as intentionally foreign objects, most notably the Teal Metal stair structure(OMA), which operates simultaneously as circulation and sculptural form. Furniture was treated as architectural mass rather than decoration: low, heavy volumes with clean geometry ground the room and counterbalance the vertical movement and chromatic intensity of the stairs. A restrained cream palette was employed to temper visual noise and allow proportion, material contrast, and scale to drive the composition. Modularity was fundamental, enabling the room to shift between events, performances, and communal use without sacrificing identity. The intention was to produce a crisp, controlled atmosphere that prioritizes clarity, focus, and intention, resulting in an environment where new and old coexist in deliberate tension. #interiordesign #brutalist #spaceagedesign #postmodern #architecture by @syblyng

When the artist is steering the ship, you head in the right direction. It’s never a straight path, but it’s always the correct path.
