Clients often ask me how long their mural will take to paint. A few things that make a big difference:

Wall texture. Drywall = ❤️. Stucco or paneling? Wayyy slower.

Weather. Rain, lighting, heat waves. It can cause delays.

Colors. Colors like oranges, reds, or yellows require 4+ coats. Most colors just need 2-3.

The design itself. A simple design on a smooth wall might be quick. But a detailed design on a rough surface? See the last slide!

Typically, I advise clients to book with me at least a few months in advance. That way I can finish up my current projects, have 2-3 weeks for the design and revisions, then 2-3 weeks for mural installation. It might be faster but I’m always accounting for the unexpected.

I try to approach challenging projects with the mindset of a student. Even when things go wrong, I like to think to myself “at least I’m learning, people pay good money to learn!”

Like with these murals in 2023, it was only my second time ever using any lift, and I’d never used this kind before. I basically taught myself with YouTube!

I even pulled an all nighter painting one of these because I’d told the client I would finish on a certain day but I couldn’t accurately gauge my painting speed yet. Another learning there was…literally just ask the client if it’s ok to extend the timeline 😅, they’ll probably prefer you’re being safe on-site to being perfect. At the time, I was so worried how that would look. Now, I know how to use all kinds of lifts and accurately predict project timelines! by @sydbloomstudio

I’ve got some super exciting news! I’ve started working on my very first collection of original canvas paintings. The last 7 years I’ve primarily done commission work on murals and illustration and would squeeze in my own digital artwork when I could. My personal work definitely took a back seat. But lately I’m feeling a renewed spark to prioritize my own creative vision. Stay tuned and I’ll be sharing sneak peeks of the process over the next few months!
