In the summer of 2006, I interned in the @jacobspillow Education department — a pivotal experience that helped prepare me for my dance career.

A new 21 years old, I learned how to have a job, that is, how to manage a role and responsibilities toward a clear goal. I built relationships with an array of wonderful humans who have supported me throughout my journey.

*AND* I learned what to do if you see a bear roaming around. (Extend your arms up to make yourself as big as possible, then slowly, back away. 🐻✨)

It was the second time I found myself at a summer dance festival feeling affirmed that I wanted to have a life in dance. (The @amerdancefest won me over when I was 14.)

So it is a full circle moment to celebrate SLMDances’ 15th Anniversary at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. We will present a program spanning years of our work: excerpts from PURPLE (2023) will provide a spiritual grounding, while an excerpt from The Window Sex Project (2012) will be our protest dance. We’ll indulge our call for Black girls’ pleasure and joy with CAKE (2014), and I will dance audience favorite I Wished On The Moon (2012).

Our team is fully in production mode and plot twists have begun!

I’m feeling grateful to be working from a grounded, spacious place, as we prepare over the next couple of weeks. 🙏🏽✨ by @sydmosley

Today, @nytimes highlighted @slmdances collective leadership practice amongst many other dance organizations.

I’m so grateful for the Creative and Visioning Partners who make up the core of our collective. Without their investment and commitment, none of our creative and community work would be possible.

I’m also so so grateful for those who forged this way of working, both outside and inside the dance field. Shared leadership, distributed leadership, collective leadership — whatever you wanna call it — is ancient practice, especially amongst Black and indigenous folks.

To specifically name my lineages inside of the dance field, I learned directly from @browngirldance / INSPIRIT and @palomamcgregor / @angelaspulse, who learned from @ubwdance and @danceexchange. A. Nia Austin-Edwards / @purposeproductions guided SLMDances in refining this practice during their four year tenure as Strategic Visioning Partner, working alongside myself and Artistic Visioning Partner @allegromita.

And now, our team of Visioning Partners including @marvngaye and Creative Partners including @well_banne @jdlee1135 @joanina.bradford @_likecandy @guallygual @lorejrm have defined our collective:

The SLMDances collective is a network of visioning partners, creative partners, creative partners in development, guest artists, advisory board, and a visioning board moving as a poly rhythmic ensemble.

Our collective is an individually owned, cooperatively run organization with intentional concentric circles of support and leadership.

Our collective practice holds space for you to dream radically and to show up as your full self with accountability to the collective as we grow into leadership.

Thank you @margaretfuhrer for sharing a bit of our story. by @sydmosley

“Justice is not always loud,” write collaborators @sydmosley and @roxitheresearcher. “Sometimes it looks like two Black women—choreographers, educators, and community builders—laughing over the phone, refining choreography between rehearsals, or reflecting with students in a circle. Sometimes it looks like rage softened into rhythm, grief metabolized through sweat, or joy held deliberately in the middle of exhaustion.

“For us, justice is practiced in the body—through African diasporic movement structures that allow us to gather, respond, refuse, and survive together. The circle. Call-and-response. Improvisation. Rhythm as grounding. Practices rooted in African diasporic traditions that continue to shape contemporary dance communities. These are not just stylistic elements; they are structures of care. These practices invite bodies often excluded from classical aesthetics—different shapes, histories, and movement vocabularies—to take up space and author their own stories. The curriculum of our engagements—how we gather, structure the circle, move, reflect, and iterate—becomes essential to the sharing itself. The process is not separate from the performance; it too is the performance.

“As artists shaped by lineage and community, we have come to understand that dance is not separate from the world’s crises—it is how we move through them.”

Soooo grateful that I got to spend this past weekend with my Stister on the occasion of her 40th birthday!

By the grace of God, Greer is here loving on all of us generously and being a brilliant guiding light. How blessed we are to walk the earth at the same time.

By the grace of God, I was able to be present and celebrate with her.

And by the grace of God, family and friends who showed up? Showed out! Understood the assignment. 70s. Disco. Playas Ball. 🪩

Happy 40th my dear sister. Love you always. by @sydmosley

This weekend I had the privilege of being honored by the Patapso River Maryland Chapter of The Links (@prclinks) as a part of their annual Women in the Arts program @morganstateu.

Their theme, Leading The Change: Women Shaping A Sustainable Future, honored me amongst a company of Black women who are both artists and change makers in their respective fields.

It was especially meaningful to receive this honor at home because may folks never forget, I’m from Baltimore.

Congratulations to all the honorees (listed below) and many thanks to The Links for this recognition.

This week I had the pleasure of being a Guest Artist at @twudance. I had such a good time sharing with their undergrad and grad students.

From teaching @slmdances rep in technique classes, sharing creative practice in composition and through a lecture with performance video, to sharing thoughts on dance education, and sharing 15 years of personal and professional history with MFAs because I *wish* someone had told me a REAL, unfiltered story of life as an artist when I was imagining my life post-grad school.

Many thanks to the division faculty and staff for your hospitality. I hope to see you again!
