SLMDances has been building something beautiful for 15 years!

In the midst of the political storm we’re in with both the private and public defunding of the arts, we do not take a single moment of SLMDances’ story for granted.

It’s literally because you share your time, energy, networks, money, space, skills, food, car rides, and even the moments reading this post, that we have accomplished all we have. NONE of where Sydnie L. Mosley Dances is today would be possible without you Supporter. 🙏🏽

THANK YOU. 🥂🍾

At this moment in SLMDances’ story, our vision remains clear:

We are moving the stories of Black-femmes at the intersection of many marginalized identities to the front through our performances, education work, and organizational structure. 🖤

Audience participation and community collaboration is central and essential to this work. ⭕️

SLMDances is a catalyzing force.💥

Take a moment to reflect on our impact over the last 15 years: What We’ve Done, Where We’ve Done It, and Who Made It Possible.

We can’t wait to celebrate with you this summer at @jacobspillow !

The dancers stand gathered in a clump, and in unison, their bodies face the camera while their focus and their right arms extend toward the sun in the sky. They are outside in the grass at the park with trees in the background. This image is framed with a black border and text that reads ‘Works & Process 2025-2026 Open Call Residency Artist. Sydnie L. Work-In-Progress Showing with @slmdances
A Side Of The World For A Canvas
Based on the work of Zora Neale Hurston

📅 Saturday May 16
⏰ 2-4PM
🎟️ FREE Community Program! RSVP at the link in our bio.

A Side Of The World For A Canvas is a site-responsive dance-theater work crafted to highlight Zora Neale Hurston’s legacy as a dance and theater maker, a foremother of Black feminism, and an artist whose work across media amplified the stories of everyday Black folks. The title is a quote drawn from her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God that describes the ease with which men could shoot the breeze and tell stories to one another crafting their own version of reality. In this work, women and femmes assume this agency through story telling creating their own possibilities.

This informal sharing will include a performance of their work-in-progress developed during their residency week, and invite participation and feedback from witnesses. Open to all ages.

This weekend I had the privilege of being honored by the Patapso River Maryland Chapter of The Links (@prclinks) as a part of their annual Women in the Arts program @morganstateu.

Their theme, Leading The Change: Women Shaping A Sustainable Future, honored me amongst a company of Black women who are both artists and change makers in their respective fields.

It was especially meaningful to receive this honor at home because may folks never forget, I’m from Baltimore.

Congratulations to all the honorees (listed below) and many thanks to The Links for this recognition.

This week I had the pleasure of being a Guest Artist at @twudance. I had such a good time sharing with their undergrad and grad students.

From teaching @slmdances rep in technique classes, sharing creative practice in composition and through a lecture with performance video, to sharing thoughts on dance education, and sharing 15 years of personal and professional history with MFAs because I *wish* someone had told me a REAL, unfiltered story of life as an artist when I was imagining my life post-grad school.

Many thanks to the division faculty and staff for your hospitality. I hope to see you again!

So often, movement of the body is excluded from our Black liberation stories and strategies. But @cebocampbell gets it — in his novel Sky Full of Elephants he writes that “our unison is holy” and describes Black folks dancing together en masse as the literal key to our liberation.💥

Thank you Cebo for entrusting @slmdances to bring that to life. 🙏🏽

Last week at Mryia Gallery we transformed the lower level into Mobile, Alabama sparkling at night. Just as the novel’s characters Nona and Seraphin guide Sidney and Charlie to release, laugh, sweat, and let go through movement, @__victoriaprice as Nona and @sydmosley as Seraphin invited witnesses to imagine themselves as a part of a Mobile street party moving toward the “swell of joy and freedom.”

Choreography, Script Adaptation, and Direction: Sydnie L. Mosley
Performers: Victoria Price, Sydnie L. Mosley
Music: Leoncarlo Canlas @leoncarlo and Jason B. Lucas @bizdrummer
Dramaturgy: Amy Shoshana Blumberg @amyshoshanablumberg

Special thanks to @ambitiousjaze, @yari.mercedes and Cebo for your production support, and all the artists whose offerings made this such a special evening including our closing conversation with @lenawaithe.

Today SLMDances had a great chat about what it means to exchange and share resources.

We talked a lot about what it means to give from your OVERFLOW, to give what ENERGIZES you, to give what EXCITES you!

Check out our stories and the *Resource Sharing* highlight on our page to see what our community is offering.

And please share in the chat: What do you have to give? 💚 by @slmdances

Ten years ago, SLMDances produced BodyBusiness, a work that called for folks to take care of one another through bartering and resource sharing. We are heartened to see the current flurry of resource exchange in the wake of the government’s shutdown and abandonment, and grateful that SLMDances’ BodyBusiness Resource Sharing events on Instagram Live can contribute to folks meeting their needs.

In our practice, we start from a place of abundance by naming what we have to give. Among us collectively, we have all we need. When we know what is available amongst our community members, we can connect with them to exchange those offerings.

Love. Joy. Momentum. Gratitude. These words were final takeaways during our last event where folks across the U.S. shared a myriad of offerings from garden-fresh food in Columbus, Ohio to rehearsal space in Washington, D.C. We hope you’ll join us for the next gathering.
