Grizzly 399 guides her four cubs-of the-year down a trail through the woods. In her 24 years of life to date, (which is old for a species that rarely makes it beyond age 20 in the wild) she has inspired millions of people who have either seen her and decedents in person or through the images by legendary photographer @thomasdmangelsen, who has documented her family’s story as a means of inspiring conservation for her highly persecuted and sometimes misunderstood kind.

She has faced hardships and triumphs, but her story has played a major role in the ongoing conservation effort in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

This year is another remarkable chapter of 399’s story as she emerged from hibernation with four cubs—an almost unheard of feat that occurs in only about 1-2 of 100 grizzly litters. ——————————————————————————— Big thank you to friends and mentors @charlesfelz @suecedar @frontstreetimages and @thomasdmangelsen for a wonderful weekend of photography!

During salmon season, bears often have a fishing style that is their own particular specialty… This female was a “snorkeling” specialist, often walking into deep pools of fish with her head underwater, hoping for a panicked salmon to incidentally bump straight into her amid the chaos beneath the shimmery waves. Contrary to most perceptions, brown bears are actually quite mediocre fishermen. Only with a high density of salmon in a stream do they hold much chance of snagging a fast-moving fish.

A brown bear mother keeps her little ones close by as they watch “rush hour” on the salmon stream below. As the tide began to fall the salmon began getting trapped in the rapidly retreating water, drawing more than 20 bears to a small space at the river’s elongating mouth.

Splash

An Alaskan brown bear leaps through the water after a swiftly escaping salmon. The salmon runs were relatively smaller on the Katmai coast along with a poor berry crop this summer. As a result, bears would put their full effort into every fish they saw, making quite a splash, yet rarely coming up with the fish…

What’s my favorite part of @pangea.expeditions fishing bears season in Katmai? In a hidden corner of one of Katmai’s ice-carved bays, bears wade through emerald streams, watching for the rush of salmon as the ocean drains away and evening light fades. The roar of a nearby falls, the golden sunlight that bounces from from steep fjord walls, and the rustles of bears on the move. It feels like a space between reality and dream… taken in Alaska by @sylerpr

“Good sit!”

Watching this bear with my @pangea.expeditions group gave us some good laughs. He would sit in the silliest poses just waiting for a fish to come up his section of the stream. Then when the moment was right, he’d jump into the river to catch.
