What is language and how do we create meaning? I wrote a text for this great book, How to Do Things with VALIE EXPORT, edited by Katharina Müller, Eszter Kondor, and Michael Loebenstein from the Austrian Film Museum.
 In my text, “Schnitte, Risse und Bewegungen. Behinderte Stimmen und widerspenstige Sprachen / Cuts, Tears, and Movements Disabled Voices and Rebellious Languages“ I examine the two film works Das Unsagbare Sagen [Saying the Unspeakable] (1992) and I turn over the pictures of my voice in my head (2008) and interpret them as intersectional feminist and anti-ableist. I analyze the significance of voice, language and body and the concept of cripping in EXPORTs works – a critical process that shatters linguistic structures and breaks down normative practices of communication and language. 👅 
The book is available in German and English and I have major fangirl moments when looking at the list of contributors. Some things take time – so I am all the more delighted that this article, which I wrote what feels like an eternity ago (2021? 2022?), has now been peer-reviewed and published. In it, I position queer-feminist curating as an affective practice that manifests itself particularly in negative affects. I refer to two exhibitions that I curated during my time at Galerie im Turm in Berlin: “Fat Femme Furious” by Julischka Stengele and “You Make Me Very Hungry/Und ich hab schon wieder Hunger” by Lisa Holzer. It’s so nice that feminist theorist and pioneer in this field, Jennifer Tyburczy, has written a commentary on it. 🫶 Also in this issue: a feature and short reflection on the group exhibition “pornotopia revised” which Sarah Held and I curated in 2022 at Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna, as well as great contributions by Iz Paehr, Magdalena Kallenberger, MELT (Ren Loren Britton & Iz Paehr), William J. Last summer, among (too) many other things, I was thinking about how time, representations and (infra-)structures can be queered and cripped within artistic exhibition practices. Was haben KI und Künstler:innen auf dem Bauernhof zu suchen? Wie kann man messen, ob eine Kuh sich wohlfühlt? Und wie verändern KI, Automatisierung und digitale Systeme die Landwirtschaft und damit grundlegende Bereiche unseres Lebens? Um diese und weitere Fragen wird es bei der Projektvorstellung von „School of Cow Comfort“ gehen. Am Donnerstag, 24. September 2026, von 19–21 Uhr. Zum Auftakt von „School of Cow Comfort“ geben die !Mediengruppe Bitnik (@mediengruppe_bitnik) und Künstler Simon Weckert (@simonweckert) Einblicke in ihre Recherche zu Kunst und KI auf dem Bauernhof. Dabei fragen sie, wie neue Technologien das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch, Tier und Landwirtschaft verändern. Prof. Dr. Tim Römer von der Universität Osnabrück (@uniosnabrueck) ergänzt das mit Einblicken in aktuelle Entwicklungen und den Einsatz von KI in der Landwirtschaft. Im Anschluss kommen die Akteur:innen von „School of Cow Comfort“ miteinander ins Gespräch, moderiert von Sylvia Sadzinski (@sylv_inski), die das Projekt gemeinsam mit der !Mediengruppe Bitnik kuratiert. 🍃SAVE THE DATE: OPENING Weirder, Louder, Taller, Uglier – For Weeds to Rewild / Unkraut zur Verwilderung | 26.06.2026, 18 Uhr / 6 pm DE Das deutsche Wort Unkraut hat eine abwertende Konnotation – es bezeichnet Pflanzen, die als unerwünscht gelten und normalerweise entfernt werden. Doch viele dieser sogenannten „Beikräuter“ sind ökologisch wertvoll, ernähren Insekten, stärken den Boden und sind für den Menschen essbar oder sogar medizinisch wirksam. Unkraut erinnert uns daran, dass das, was außerhalb der konventionellen Ordnung liegt, oft Teil einer reichen und komplexen inneren Ökologie ist. Unkraut tritt in der Ausstellung Louder, Taller, Uglier, Weirder - Unkraut zur Verwilderung nicht nur als Studienobjekt oder Metapher auf, sondern als aktives Prinzip. Durch diverse, in ihrer Struktur oder Aussage widerspenstige künstlerische Positionen, wird die Frage aufgeworfen, wann etwas, eine Handlung oder ein Zustand, „unkrautartig“, ist. Was bedeutet es, „Unkraut“ zu sein – zu verunsichern, zu durchdringen, zu überschreiten – innerhalb der Kunst, Institutionen, Sprache und des Alltagslebens? EN The German word for weed, Unkraut, carries a dismissive connotation — naming plants that are deemed undesirable and usually removed. Yet many of these so-called Beikräuter are ecologically valuable, nourish insects, strengthen soil, and are edible or even medicinal for humans. Weeds remind us that what is outside conventional order often participates in rich and complex inner ecologies.Weeds appear in the exhibition not only as subjects of study or metaphor, but as active principles. Through various artistic positions that are unruly in their structure or message, the question is raised as to when something, an action or a state, is weedy? What does it mean to be weed — to unsettle, to permeate, to transgress —within art, institutions, language, and everyday life? Im Gespräch: Jack Halberstam, Ren Loren Britton und Sylvia Sadzinski 20.06.2026 19 h How might we inhabit the cuts and cracks of institutions? What forms of relation and collective practice become possible in the gaps of established norms and structures? This conversation brings together theorist Jack Halberstam, artist Ren Loren Britton, and curator Sylvia Sadzinski to think through moments of rupture, transformation, and emergence. Moving between material and social processes, they will explore how queer, trans*, and crip temporalities, strategies and discourses unsettle dominant rhythms and structure and open spaces for other ways of knowing, making, and being together. Tracing the productive potential of institutional and infrastructural fissures the conversation lingers with the question of what can be made possible in the spaces between structures, within their fractures, and beyond their prescribed forms. UPCOMING Ren Loren Britton @brittonstudio Deixis & Needs Becoming B – Chapter 6 12.06.2026 – 09.08.2026 What if needs, rather than norms, shaped how we live together, form relationships and organize institutions? Centering on this question, “Deixis & Needs”, the first institutional solo exhibition by Ren Loren Britton, curated by Sylvia Sadzinski @sylv_inski, is an expansive, multi-sensory installation that brings together sculptural objects, textiles and sound. The linguistic concept of deixis refers to words such as “I”, “you”, “here”, or “now”, whose meaning changes depending on who is speaking and from what position. Drawing on discourses of disability justice as well as queer, trans* and crip perspectives, “Deixis & Needs” shifts the focus from questions of inclusion and access towards needs – understood not as individual deficits or fixed categories, but as fluid, situational and relational: We all have needs that change depending on time, context and relationships. In “Deixis & Needs”, bodies and their needs are therefore not only temporal but also political and sensorial. Balloons filled with helium, wrapped in textile covers and embroidered with bodily fragments form the starting point of the installation. Over the course of the exhibition, they gradually change their position and shape, inviting exhibition-goers to touch and interact with them. Their vibrations help to make sound a tactile experience. An accompanying reader with contributions from theorists and artists will explore the exhibition’s central themes in greater depth. The programme is complemented by events that activate the exhibition, extend it into digital realm and push its temporal boundaries. “Deixis & Needs” is the sixth chapter of the ongoing project “Becoming B” and is organized in collaboration with the feminist art space alpha nova & galerie futura @alpha_nova_galerie_futura taken in Künstlerhaus Bethanien by @sylv_inski

OPENING Weirder, Taller, Uglier, Louder – Feral Possible around Karl-Marx-Straße and Carrer Cobalt 18/02/2026, from 6 PM Weirder, Taller, Uglier, Louder – Feral Possible around Karl-Marx-Straße and Carrer Cobalt is the third exhibition within the overall project Louder, Taller, Uglier, Weirder – Learning from Weeds. For this stage at Bärenzwinger, new works take root. Artist Ran Zhang @distant_hat invited artist duo Lolo & Sosaku @loloysosaku to collaborate on creating a weedy environment within a space marked by a particular history of control and domination, both in its current role as an exhibition venue and its past as a bear pit. Louder, Taller, Uglier, Weirder – Learning from Weeds is a curatorial project comprising four exhibitions and a series of events that appear as “sprouts” across the city over the course of the project. From today, this year-long project officially begins to grow 🌱 I hope you join us along the way while we will be learning from weeds 🌿 Inspired in an intuitive and visceral way by weeds, Louder, Taller, Uglier, Weirder – Learning from Weeds / Von Unkraut lernen is a curatorial project composed of events we call sprouts and exhibitions that unfold with different — and perhaps irregular — rhythms. Spanning nearly a year, the project begins today at Xanadu in Neukölln, before opening its first exhibition at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien this Friday. From this initial moment, many more sprouts will appear across the city and in various project spaces, along with three further exhibitions at Galerie im Turm in Friedrichshain, Bärenzwinger in Mitte, and Galerie im Körnerpark in Neukölln. We start with a direction to follow and the curiosity to discover what grows next: how and where will the weeds that give life to this project take root?
