“Very reverentially, I entered a most holy place. Shortly thereafter, the Lord appeared. I immediately offered pranams at his Divine Feet. Afterwards, the Lord said: ‘Turja, let us sing a new song.’”

So proud to share this book, which makes my whole heart swell.

Weather and the Whale is the result of a 2-year working group of scientists, artists and scholars investigating the legacies of whaling, colonialism and climate change on marine mammals. Humpback whales, sea lions, sea otters. Our family, if you’re from California.

When I met Rachel Nelson and Alexandra Moore, they opened a tiny sparkling purple box containing a fossilized whale ear the size of my fist. That’s what’s on the cover. A 3-5 million years old whale ear!!

I grew up under the Santa Cruz mountains, and as a designer, don’t always have a way to participate in the kinds of environmental research and restoration I believe in. So it fulfilled me deeply to me to create this book with the UC Santa Cruz Institute of the Arts and Sciences and the Friedlaender Bio-Telemetry and Behavioral Ecology Lab. Such an incredible creative process held in deep integrity with the love, respect, sorrow and hope we all share for this planet and its majestic creatures.

Petals from Flor de Jamaica, a limited edition photo book made with my dear friend and filmmaker Jazmin Garcia. Master of the mystical and the grave.

Slipped between the seams is a script that tells the story of Doña Berta. A solitary woman living by the sea, speaking to her ghosts on the radio. “She learned to occupy her eternity bound to flor de jamaica…”

Have loved this painting for many years and finally used it for last month’s Ganga Blues. ‘Mary Magdalene Washing the Feet of Jesus’ by the Indian artist Frank Wesley. It depicts a moment in scripture that transformed how I understand the human responsibility to sorrow. Made this show during a season of brittle faith. Sandcastles tumbling down without the satisfaction of a passionate surrender. But “grief is fertile soil” (as I’ve been told), and I have always found myself in a theology of the fragile.

The show begins with a rendition of Hildegard von Bingen’s ‘Caritas abundant’ or ‘Love Abounds’ by the St. Stanislav’s Girl’s Choir. Heard while nesting in England after leaving divinity school.

Cross is by the wonderful Subodh Kerkar, on display at the Museum of Goa after having been submerged in the ocean for 4 years. It surfaced covered in oysters. Mediums listed are “Pearls and Metal”.

Currently reading The Diaries and Letters of Etty Hillesum (1941-43) if anyone would like to have a book club.

Full show is archived on NTS.live. Enjoy the music xo by @symmmrin

If longing were crystallized as an hour of radio, maybe it would sound like this. Odissi steps; cows taken to pasture; Reynaldo Hahn; Shirley Kwan; Abdullah Ibrahim. Thank you @symmmrin for letting me share your airwaves.

BLACK SPIRIT X GANGA BLUES
ON NTS RADIO
FEBRUARY 18 8PM PST

made with love, from India by @a_rucker ♥

This hour of music moves through gospel, soul, and a spectrum of Black artists, tracing music as a spiritual architecture beyond the individual. Blending sacred textures with ambient and rhythmic passages, we explore sound as vibration, a living force shaped by Black Spirit.
