Venice on film.
I’m back and I don’t know what to do with myself!

This experience has been a beautiful reminder that I am defined not only by the work, but by the wonderful people around me—people who continue to inspire me, stimulate me creatively, challenge me, and fill my life with endless adventure.

AROOJ AFTAB - Night Reign
2024 @ververecords

Released on May 31, 2024, Brooklyn-based Pakistani singer-songwriter and producer’s fifth studio album and her solo major label debut, "Night Reign", was nominated twice at the Grammy Awards, for Best Global Music Performance and Best Alternative Jazz Album. Sung in Urdu and English, her ambient jazz inspired by ghazal and qawwali folk traditions mesmerizes through the melancholy of its nocturnal musing.

Nearly two weeks in my new home (in a new city! in a new country! On a new continent!) and it’s just settling in that I live in London now. Thrilled for this new chapter but would be remiss not to mention all who made NYC what it was for the last 13 years. I’m missing some major players here (hope you’re sat for a second slideshow) but this stoop was really a pillar of the seven-odd years in my time as a Fort Greene girl ❤️ end of an era but the start of an even better one. Feeling incredibly grateful and emotional to my entire community who made NYC feel like home (even more so than my real hometown, SF!!!). Don’t be shy and come visit me! (I can only tag 20 people on this post, sorry if you’re not!!!)

Join us on Tuesday, February 3, for a conversation between filmmaker and photographer Jazmin Garcia (@buffalotearz) and graphic designer Symrin Chawla (@symmmrin) about Garcia’s photobook debut, 𝓕𝓵𝓸𝓻 𝓭𝓮 𝓙𝓪𝓶𝓪𝓲𝓬𝓪, recently published by Somesuch Editions (@somesuchandco) 🌺

𝓕𝓵𝓸𝓻 𝓭𝓮 𝓙𝓪𝓶𝓪𝓲𝓬𝓪, weaves together the floral and the feminine. Its title comes from the hibiscus flower, ubiquitous throughout Latin America and a grounding presence in Garcia’s work; she would sip hibiscus tea as part of her daily ritual while working on a film script whose fragments appear in this book. Designed by Symrin Chawla, the book reflects the delicate beauty of flowers, and even more so, the delicate beauty of its subjects: two women who serve as both muses and vessels for Garcia’s poetic visual reflections. While many consider the beauty of flowers and of women to be ephemeral, Garcia taps into the hope that, through this material form, such beauty might be made everlasting.
