“Pneuma_TOKAS2026” senses light through a community of leaves and branches, translating subtle variations in plant biosignals associated with photosynthetic activity into ripples on the water, gently and fleetingly returning them to the surrounding environment.
Drawing on our closeness to and understanding of Japanese aesthetics, we chose to revisit and recreate this work, originally developed during the pandemic in 2020. Within the inevitable cycles of life, death, and renewal, there is always an evergreen tree, quietly and continuously responding. We approach the work through a spirit of contemplation.

Hourcrystal_2026
Collection on Permanent Display
"Hourcrystal" is a site-specific hybrid installation conceived for Crystal Park’s wetland conservation area in New York. Centered on a boulder suspended within the forest, the work collects rainwater and snowmelt, releasing a single drop into a basin every hour. Contact sensors capture and amplify each impact. It envisions nature as a community with rhythms of its own, creating a temporal order shared by water, time, and the forest — an expression of co-temporality with nature.

Past two years, we have worked closely with the Crystal Park team to transport this 500 kg sculptural installation from Taiwan to New York. We visited the park in every season to conduct site surveys and installed a low-power heating and drainage system to keep the work operating below freezing.
We look forward to seeing vines gradually climb over the structure, allowing it to blend into the landscape until it is barely noticeable, like a faint sound from a forest spirit.

Centered on a boulder suspended within the forest, the work collects rainwater and snowmelt, releasing a single drop into a basin every hour. Contact sensors capture and amplify each impact, transforming subtle environmental rhythms into sound and allowing otherwise imperceptible changes to gradually become manifest.

Responding to Crystal Park’s identity as a woodland retreat dedicated to coexistence with nature, Hourcrystal extends the site’s landscape, histories, and ethos of cross-cultural exchange. It envisions nature as a community with rhythms of its own, creating a temporal order shared by water, time, and the forest — an expression of co-temporality with nature.

Chi installed Itstory_El Yunque at Professor Uriarte's home.
We hope it allows her to revisit the forest she has worked in for more than thirty years during her recovery.
We wish her a swift recovery and many days back in the field❤️

We'll return to New York soon!

🌿Borderless Habitat🌿
Borderless Habitat is an exhibition developed through a collaboration between Synphysica and American ecologist Maria Uriarte. Bringing together six decades of ecological data, the exhibition approaches the forest’s living history and explores how seemingly fixed boundaries begin to dissolve when ecological processes are transformed into shared sensory experience.

Organizer:
Taipei Cultural Center in New York

Our solo exhibition in New York came to a close today🙏
The digital twin forest we built together with Maria Uriarte will continue to grow.

TAIWAN POP | TCCNY 35 - 01-3
🗽紐文35 - 曼哈頓臺灣文化黑潮🌊🌊

What if a forest could exist in the middle of New York?
🌿🍃🌱🌾🍀☘️🍁🍂
That question became the starting point for Borderless Habitat.

During ChiaoChi CHOU research at Columbia University, Taiwanese interdisciplinary artist Chiaochi Chou began exploring how the forests of Puerto Rico could be experienced from within the city.

To create the work, she carried scanning equipment across steep mountainsides, capturing the landscape piece by piece.

Ask her what plant best describes her, and she'll smile:

"A wild epiphyte."

Through Borderless Habitat, Chou invites us to step beyond the familiar and discover that some places aren't far away,

they simply ask us to look closer.
🌿🍃🌱🌾🍀☘️🍁🍂
One last day. One last chance to step beyond the familiar.

🌿 Exhibition | Borderless Habitat
📅 July 31, 9:30 AM–4:00 PM
📍 TECO-NY | 1 E 42nd St, New York

《Borderless Habitat》邀請觀眾從熟悉的城市出發，走進另一片真實存在的森林。

那些平常體驗不到的地方，不是不存在。
只是等待我們發現。
