Thank you to everyone who got involved and who has showed their support, doing interviews honestly terrified me. I’ve always been a person who will shut down at the idea of public speaking. While it was scary I am so glad I did it and got to showcase some of the amazing creatives in our community.
It is something I would love to do again in the future 🫶🏻

Sorry to everyone who wanted an interview but we didn’t get a chance to complete it, I’m sure we will have many more opportunities in the future 🫶🏻

What a whirlwind of a weekend! I'm a little at a loss on what to say.

It still doesn't feel real that I've finally entered my first cosplay competition, and that not only did I place but that I was awarded Best Overall.

I've wanted to compete for a long time, probably dreamed about it ever since @raggirare dragged me to watch the comps at Auckland Armageddon in 2008. I was really wowed by the people walking across the stage in their hand-made costumes, but I was less than a year into the hobby at the time with no sewing experience whatsoever, so I knew it would be a long while yet before I would dare to dip my foot in myself.

For years, I held off because I didn't think I was good enough for it yet; that my work was still too messy, too slapdash, too amateur. And then, when I thought I might MAYBE be good enough, I told myself I still wasn't ready. (And truth be told, up til I walked off stage at the end of the night on Saturday, I still didn't think I was!)

I want to express a very heartfelt thank you to all the friends who encouraged me to enter Todoroki, when I started tossing up the idea after SMASH. Without you all, this would not have been possible. I would have found another reason to chicken out yet again.

Thank you also to my partner @ladyvengeance.cos for wrangling my anxiety, self-doubt, and piles of fabric and trim in places they shouldn't be over the past few months. You really are my rock, my anchor in the raging waves.

I want to congratulate @madpontine for winning Best Craftmanship, and @carbon_cosplay for winning the Judges' Wildcard award! Fantastic work, both of you, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work in future!

Tangentially related, I forgot to get handles and usernames from most of the other contestants that day, and I've only managed to find a handful of them so far. I was really wowed by the work of some of the people I spoke to during the comp and I'd love to be able to follow their work further. It's legitimately one of my biggest regrets from Saturday, if anyone could point me in the directions of the other entrants I'd be very grateful!!

For my final interview for the weekend we have the amazing Syn who has a whopping 20 years experience as a cosplayer under his belt! We were lucky enough to catch up with him after winning his first competition the day prior!
If you are a My Hero fan then you will absolutely love Syn’s cosplays! He does my hero but sometimes with a twist! My personal favourites are his fantasy/my hero mashups 😍

So excited to start posting the photos from this set! Cassa really did amazing work with these shots, feels like he pulled them right out of my imagination from the scarce handful of inspo reference images I'd collated.

I first came across Dia's tiktok account through her Deku cosplay almost three years ago, so it's been an absolute dream to be able to collaborate with her on this little project! Thank you so much for agreeing to this self-indulgent little Saturday plan, and the photoshoot on top of it! I had a lot of fun, and I hope we can collaborate again one day :D

I've been so excited to start sharing these photos since the Rain Room at VENTspace with @blackholecosvent!⁡

⁡Sabito is my favourite character from KnY, because of course I got immediately attached to the dead guy 💀 I've got his default clothing planned but I saw that sketch of him all grown up as a Hashira and I just had to put that on my bucket list. 😭⁡⁡

⁡It's also been a while since I last did SFX edits; forgot how fun they are to do. More superpowered characters may continue to be in my future (as if MHA isn't full of them already lol)...

This photo took ages to edit, but it was well worth it! I've never added water effects like this to a photo before, so I ended up spending a lot of time just experimenting with the direction and composition of the water stream. The working file ended up over 250MB in size by the end of it 💀⁡⁡ But I'm really pleased with the end result!

⁡Hope you all had a lovely one today, and that this next liminal stretch of time between Christmas and New Years is productive or restful... or both! My partner and I are going to take apart my crafting area and reorganise it in preparation for next season's con crunching.⁡ Probably also going to make myself scarce on socmeds next week (though I'll be on Discord as usual) to decompress a little after this year and maybe finally treat myself to a bit of gaming again before I go back to work.

⁡Massive thank you to @havecamerawillsnap, @cassasshots, and @owlphonso for organising the final @blackholecosvent event shoot for the year!! It was a blast, and even though I found myself pretty quickly overstimulated wearing my silly little dress and got out of cosplay early, I still had a lot of fun just hanging out with people, assisting with a few shoots, and just sitting around watching other people having fun. Here's to another year!⁡
