Chicago students send Pope Leo a White Sox care package after cancer surgery

By OSV News

CHICAGO (Vatican News) -- As Pope Leo XIV continues recovering from lung cancer surgery, students from his hometown of Chicago are sending a heartfelt care package to the pope, including get-well cards and a Chicago White Sox blanket.

The effort is being led by Team 14, a student group at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy named in honor of the pope. The group gained attention last year after a mock conclave went viral on social media, and several students later traveled to Rome to meet Pope Leo in person.

The roughly 40-member group regularly gathers for prayer and service projects, including food drives for people in need. Students said the pope's illness hit close to home because of the personal connection they feel with him. One sixth-grader described Pope Leo as "like a close friend," while an eighth-grade student said meeting him made the news of his illness especially concerning.

Pope Leo underwent surgery at Gemelli Hospital on Oct. 13, when doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung. According to the Holy See Press Office, follow-up blood tests and a chest X-ray on Oct. 14 showed his postoperative recovery is progressing normally.

Cupich of Chicago, at the conclusion of the pope's weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, Oct. 8, 2025. As Pope Leo recovers from surgery on Oct. 13, 2026, during which doctors removed his lower right lung to treat a cancerous tumor, a group of students from the Chicago school is sending him get-well cards and a Chicago White Sox blanket. 🍎 A fall field trip full of apple-y fun!

Fayetteville's Immaculate Conception kindergartners had a wonderful time on their fall field trip to Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards! The students rode a tractor through the orchard to pick apples, enjoyed cinnamon doughnuts and apple cider for a snack and had fun exploring the new playground.

The trip brought their classroom learning to life! The students have been learning about apples, including their different parts and how to make applesauce. They also read a book about Johnny Appleseed.

It was a fun-filled day for everyone, including the parent volunteers! 🍂 by @syrcatholicsun

🐄First-graders at Immaculate Conception School recently spent a fun morning at Our Farm in Manlius, a family-owned farm that's been growing and selling fresh produce at a roadside stand near Cazenovia since 1985.

During the visit, the students watched Boris, the farm's amazing trebuchet that has launched over 2,000 pumpkins! They also rode a scenic wagon ride to the pumpkin field, where they picked a pumpkin to bring home. The class made new animal friends at the farm's petting zoo, which included goats, sheep, a donkey calf, and a mini horse. There was also a duck-shaped maze and horseback riding to enjoy.

What an exciting morning at the farm! 🚜 by @syrcatholicsun

The annual Red Mass, in honor of the beginning of the court year and members of the legal profession, was celebrated today at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

During his homily, Bishop Douglas J. Lucia read a portion of this prayer by St. Thomas More, the patron saint of those in the legal profession:

O Lord, give us a mind that is humble, quiet, peaceable, patient and charitable, and a taste of your Holy Spirit in all our thoughts, words and deeds. O Lord, give us a lively faith, a firm hope, a fervent charity, a love of You. Take from us all lukewarmness in meditation and all dullness in prayer. Give us fervor and delight in thinking of You, your grace, and your tender compassion toward us. Give us, good Lord, the grace to work for the things we pray for. Amen. by @syrcatholicsun

🎒✏️ Angel scholars with the Guardian Angel Society at Bishop Ludden-Grimes recently met for the first time during the new academic year. The Guardian Angel Society was founded by Father Champlin (seen on the poster behind the students) and helps ensure underprivileged families can provide their children with a Catholic School education.

Next year, the Guardian Angel Society will be celebrating 30 years since its founding. 👀 Look for a full article on the organization's past, present, and future in the next SOLIS magazine - due out later this fall! by @syrcatholicsun
