We sat down with fashion designer Sampson Yaw Somuah (@syso_gh), who rebuilds from discarded garments and is pushing Ghana’s fashion into a new, more sustainable conversation.

He walks us through the scraps-on-the-floor beginnings, the slow decisions, the way a silhouette doesn’t “appear” so much as it reveals itself after an hour of testing blues.

Introducing the ASASA Collection I - The Crazy Stitch Jacket.

This piece is deeply rooted in childhood memories shared by many middle and lower income African homes ( Ghana 🇬🇭 ) where school uniforms weren’t replaced every term, but made to last. Our parents bought them oversized, so we could grow into them, wearing them for years.

Over time, the fabric would weaken especially at the back and local tailors would carefully mend them using bold, visible stitches. What was once a simple act of repair became a quiet symbol of resilience, resourcefulness, and care.

This jacket reimagines that story through the
“crazy stitch” technique-turning survival into statement.

Designed to be reversible, it also features a Sankofa print on the back a powerful reminder that “it is not wrong to go back and retrieve what you have forgotten.”

Wear the story. Embrace the past. Redefine the future-sustainably.
