Your players are spaced… but nobody has room to drive.

Sound familiar?

Comment GAPS and I’ll DM you the registration link for my upcoming FREE Zoom clinic.

We’ll talk about creating bigger driving gaps with cuts, movement, and simple actions—and teaching players to recognize when to attack.

The goal: get downhill, paint touches , and make the defense help.

For years, System Basketball has been dedicated to helping coaches build better systems.

That mission isn’t changing.

It’s growing.

Beginning in Spring 2027, we’re launching the System Basketball Girls High School Travel Program.

We’re taking the same principles we’ve taught thousands of coaches through the System Basketball Framework and bringing them directly to the court with high school athletes who want to develop, compete, and reach their potential.

This won’t be just another travel program.

Our focus will be on player development, basketball IQ, modern offensive concepts, leadership, and preparing players for what’s next.

We’re excited to build something special.

More details, tryouts, and program information will be announced soon. Stay tuned. by @systemhoops

🏀 STOP wasting practice time on pointless basketball warm-up drills!

Just because your players are moving doesn’t mean they’re getting better.

Too many basketball practices start with drills that keep players busy but don’t prepare them for the game.

Your warm-ups should have a purpose.

✅ Build game-like habits
✅ Develop basketball skills
✅ Get players thinking and making decisions
✅ Prepare players to play, not just break a sweat

Every minute of practice matters.

Don’t just warm them up. Make them better.

👇 Coaches, what’s your favorite basketball warm-up drill?

Pressure defense starts with learning how to TRAP! 🏀

The 1v2 Trap Drill teaches players how to work together, close space, take away escape angles, and turn defensive pressure into offensive opportunities.

One ball handler. Two defenders. Simple setup, but a lot of decision-making.

The goal isn’t just to trap the basketball. It’s to teach defenders how to communicate, anticipate, and force the offense into tough decisions.

And when you get the steal? Attack and score!

Coaching takeaway: Don’t just teach your players where to trap. Teach them HOW to trap and what to do when the ball comes out.

Pressure defense is about creating advantages, not just chasing turnovers.

I’d make the coaching lesson more explicit: the rotation isn’t just movement—it’s a decision that buys time for the defense to recover.

Your basketball defense isn’t getting beat on the first drive…

It’s getting beat on the rotation.

Helping isn’t enough. We have to teach players to HELP WITH PURPOSE.

The goal of a defensive rotation isn’t just to get another body in front of the ball. It’s to stop penetration, take away the next advantage and buy time for the defense to recover.

Pressure the ball.
Protect the paint.
Rotate to the next threat.
Recover and reconnect.

That’s the coaching takeaway: don’t just teach players WHERE to rotate. Teach them WHY they’re rotating and what their rotation is trying to take away.

When players understand the purpose behind the rotation, basketball defense becomes faster, more connected and harder to break down.

How are you teaching defensive rotations and help defense in practice?

🏀 4 v 3 Paint Touch Game

Four attackers. Three defenders. Two paint touches before a shot.

Players learn to attack gaps, read the help, and move to give the ball handler options.

The drill isn’t the point. The decisions your players learn are.

Shoot it. Drive it. Move it.

Join the System Basketball Community for more drills and see how I apply them in our practices.

A coach asked me, “How would you modify your Blood drills for 5-out?”

I run basically the same drill. In Blood 44, I move the player from the traditional dunker spot out to the stretch 45 spot.

Now we have two corners, a stretch 45, and one attacker.

The decisions stay the same: attack the advantage, get a paint touch, and read the help. Score or spray it out, then keep the advantage going.

Shoot It. Drive It. Move It. 🏀

Zone offense doesn’t have to be complicated.

The defense may change, but our offensive principles don’t have to.

Move the zone.
Make 1 defender guard 2.
Read the defender.
Attack the decision.

Instead of giving players another set of plays to memorize, teach them what the action is trying to create.

In this action, we’re forcing a defender to make a choice.

Take one away? We attack the other.

That’s the game.

🏀 Shoot it. Drive it. Move it.

Defense has to be more than effort. It needs a purpose, standards, and a way to measure whether you’re actually winning the battles that matter.

For us, it comes down to:

Pressure the ball.
Protect the paint.
No rhythm 3’s.

Then we measure the battles that tell the story — points in the paint, turnovers, shot differential, free throw attempts, 6+ turkeys, and finishing possessions with one shot and done.

We don’t just play defense.

We teach it. We measure it. We compete at it.

Basketball is a game of decisions.

The goal of our system is simple:

🏀 Simplify decisions for our players.
🏀 Multiply decisions for our opponents.

Offensively, we want to attack, create advantages, and give our players clear reads and clear actions.

Defensively, we want to pressure, create more possessions, and force our opponents to make difficult decisions over and over again.

More difficult decisions → more mistakes.
More mistakes → more possessions.
More possessions → more opportunities to score.

That’s the foundation of how we think about building a system.

Shoot it. Drive it. Move it.
