Why do I wear a respirator when detailing?

It’s a question I’ve been asked by several detailers. The answer comes down to one thing: safety.

Every chemical we use has potential hazards, even some of the pH-neutral products we consider mild.

In this video, I’m sharing actual Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information from products used in our industry. Section 8 outlines recommended personal protective equipment and exposure controls.

Not every chemical requires a respirator, but every chemical deserves your attention.

An exterior detail is more than just washing a vehicle.

This truck received a thorough exterior detail, starting with the wheels, tires, and wheel wells. Different tools, brushes, and rinse techniques were used to address contamination in each area.

Next came the Koch-Chemie pre-soak, allowing the chemistry to loosen and lift dirt before contact washing. Exterior plastics received additional attention using brushes and a Scrub Ninja.

Different surfaces require different approaches. Every step has a purpose, and the results speak for themselves.

Not every stain can be completely removed.

This vehicle came in with suspected fruit and tree debris staining that had already etched into the clear coat.

After a thorough pre-soak, contact wash, clay treatment, and machine polishing, some of the damage was successfully removed, while deeper etching remained.

The exterior was finished with attention to the trim, restoring its rich appearance and highlighting the overall finish.

Sometimes detailing is about improvement, not perfection. Knowing the limitations of the paint is just as important as knowing how to correct it.

This Land Rover Discovery received a complete interior and exterior detail, taking approximately 7.5–8 hours from start to finish.

The interior received extensive cleaning, including challenging dog hair removal, carpet cleaning, and attention to all the little details.

The exterior received a thorough pre-soak, contact wash, clay bar treatment to remove bonded contamination, and paint protection to enhance the gloss and finish.

The final results exceeded my expectations!

It’s all about patience, proper techniques, and attention to detail.

From bug-covered and dirty to a beautiful, deep black gloss! 🖤

This Ford F-150 needed some attention!

I started with Koch-Chemie Green Star diluted 10:1 to target the heavy bug contamination, followed by Multi Star at 20:1 applied directly over the top to address the remaining dirt and grime.

After a thorough rinse, I performed the contact wash using Koch-Chemie Gentle Snow Foam.

Next, I tried Koch-Chemie Wet Gloss for the very first time! Applied, rinsed, and dried.

The results? I’ll let that deep black gloss speak for itself! ✨

Every step has a purpose, and the condition determines the chemistry.

Before You Reach for the Clay Bar, Let Your Chemicals Work!

This white Mercedes-Benz had heavy contamination, and the paint literally felt and sounded like sandpaper!

Rather than immediately assuming the vehicle needed to be clay barred, I wanted to see what proper chemical pretreatment could accomplish first.

I treated the bugs with Koch-Chemie Green Star, followed by a Multi Star pre-soak at 20:1. After a thorough pressure rinse, the difference was remarkable! The surface felt smooth, the noticeable roughness was gone, and no clay bar was needed!

Even with this level of contamination, I was able to continue with the modified rinseless wash process I’ve been testing. The finished results speak for themselves!

The lesson? Don’t automatically reach for mechanical decontamination. Let your chemicals do their job first, evaluate the surface, and adapt your process accordingly.

It’s the little details that make a big difference!

Faded exterior plastic trim can take away from a vehicle’s overall appearance. Restoring that rich black finish brings back contrast, frames the body lines, and gives the vehicle a cleaner, more refined look.

Using Koch-Chemie Plast Star (PSS), I carefully treat the wheel arch trim, lower body panels, and those hard to reach areas that are often overlooked.

Because professional detailing isn’t just about the paint. It’s about the entire vehicle and the attention given to every detail.
