On Thursday 28 May, join us for an evening of film, photography and music to celebrate Liz Johnson Artur’s new video work ‘Lord of the Mics’, documenting the evolution of early grime.

Through a collage of photographs and video footage taken by @lizjohnsonartur in the early 2000s, ‘Lord of the Mics’ immortalises the key sites of grime across London from Deja Vu FM to Rhythm Division. The film — edited by @tabathabv — moves gradually from the intimate, DIY spaces of pirate radio stations onto the dance floors of Hackney and Leyton.

Thursday 28 May, 19:30-21:00
53 Brixton Station Road, London SW9 8PB

Performance by @elheist

Curated in collaboration with Errol (@errol.and)

TikToks, internet detritus and video works 🛜

Join us @londonshortfilmfest for an exploration of CoreCore - the viral internet aesthetic that remixes the visual logic of doom scrolling to make sense of the fragmentation and chaos of digital life.

📍Saturday 24 Jan
9pm @icalondon

CoreCore videos emerged on TikTok during the early 2020s, made up of seemingly unrelated clips found in disparate corners of the internet, often set to melancholic ambient music. CoreCore is the contemporary mode of montage, reminiscent of Dadaism and the work of filmmakers such as Mark Leckey and Arthur Jafa. As the barrage of content becomes ever more intense, CoreCore has emerged as an intriguing evolution in short-form filmmaking.

With a special essay by @kieranpressreynolds and a recorded Q&A with the filmmakers 🖥️

🗼Immaterial Film Club presents The Falling Sky: a programme of short films that grapples with the effects of man-made technology on the environment, and the psychological impact this has on our collective humanity. Deploying digital languages like the algorithmic abstraction of CoreCore and the erratic reactions of glitch, the films in this programme are defined by fragmentation, overload, and uncertainty, bringing together work by emerging and established artists, from Greece and beyond.

From the deep disconnect conveyed in Peggy Ahwesh’s seminal work The Falling Sky, to the perils of transhuman experiments in sSself Collision by Nas Drimousi, this screening charts the uncanny, layered terrain between humans, nature and technology.

—————————

To Immaterial Film Club παρουσιάζει το The Falling Sky: μια επιλογή από μικρού μήκους ταινίες και βίντεο που πραγματεύονται τις επιπτώσεις της τεχνολογίας στο περιβάλλον και το συλλογικό ψυχικό αντίκτυπο.

Turner Lates x Resistance: Film Screening

Step inside the story of a strike that changed British protest history.

We're screening 'Once Upon a Time in Dollis Hill' throughout the evening—a powerful short film that retells the story of the Grunwick dispute in 1976, a misunderstood moment in 20th century British history which saw a group of migrant workers walk out of a film processing factory in north west London.

Through archival photography, interviews, newspaper clippings, and rare original footage, the film brings to life a moment of resistance that challenged racism, patriarchy and trade union silence, questioning how the female South Asian leadership of the strike was ultimately obscured.

We’re returning to @_atlas_cinema on Saturday 17 May with a programme of shorts exploring the digital remnants of lost places.

From recollections of a pre-Nakba Haifa to the reminiscences of a retired factory worker in Drapetsona, Greece, these films trace memory through maps and renderings to interrogate new forms of policing physical and digital space.
