When was the last time you visited a place you didn’t have to own to belong? A place where you could hike a trail, watch a desert sunrise, photograph wildflowers, camp beneath the stars, or simply find a moment of peace.

That’s the promise of our public lands.

They aren’t owned by a corporation or a single generation. They’re held in trust for all of us, and for those who will come after us. That means every decision we make today carries a responsibility to future generations.

As California works to expand clean energy, we have an opportunity to ask an important question: Can we build the infrastructure we need without sacrificing the very public lands we’ve spent generations protecting? We believe the answer is a very loud yes.

Protecting irreplaceable landscapes and advancing renewable energy are not competing goals. With thoughtful planning, innovation, and responsible siting, California can achieve both.

The future of our public lands won’t be decided by one person or one agency. It will be shaped by the voices of people who care enough to participate.

Come celebrate the release of our new hiking guide, Urban Trails: San Diego! Susie Kara Slater and I will be hanging out, enjoying a bite and a beverage at Burger Bench Vista on March 22nd from 5-7 pm.

This is a no-host event, but everyone is welcome! We will have copies for sale, and happy to sign them as well!

I am so thankful to have celebrated the release of Urban Trails: San Diego surrounded by my dear friends and my lovely bride. It was a great hike out to the Penasquitos waterfall and bagels afterwards.

Can’t stop thinking about our trip to Africa. With the help from the amazing crew at @zaratanzaniaadventures , Sophia and I made it to the top of Kilimanjaro. It was one of the hardest things we’ve ever done. The hypoxia at 19,341’ wasn’t kind to my brain, but we did it!

I can’t stop thinking about the crew that were so kind, patient, and very strong, like @ahmed_j.s.m, @mndeme_ramadhan , Rashidi, Buli Buli, Moosa, and Salim, among many others. Their spirit and energy permeated the expedition and still resonate with our memory of the trip. Pole pole and hakuna matata are now a way of life.

We did it! We summited Mount Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Point, the highest on the continent of Africa and one of the Seven Summits.

There were 13 of us from Social Hikers, all experienced with the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge. All 13 of us summited together on Friday, January 23rd.

Our route? The 7-day Machame Trek. I’m not gonna sugar coat it, this trek was challenging. So proud of our team. 🏔️🌟

2025 Highlights, Part Two
August → December 2025, finishing the year strong.

More miles, more memories, and a lot of gratitude packed into the back half of the year.

🎒 August: Backpacking the Grand Sawtooth Loop in Idaho with Jason, Adam, Ben, Derek & Sophie
🥾 September: PCT miles from Timberline Lodge to Cascade Locks with Ben
⛰️ October: Finishing the Oregon Six-Pack of Peaks — Mount Bachelor and South Sister
🦃 November: Thanksgiving in San Francisco with Mom and Christopher
🏜️ December: Smith Rock hikes with Philip and dialing in training for Kilimanjaro (January 2026 👀)

Closing out the year stronger than it started — and already looking ahead to what’s next.

Smith Falls, Idaho. Haven’t posted a pretty shot in a while. This is my favorite of the year. It was taken on the Great Sawtooth Loop trail in Idaho, which I hiked in August with @thesocalhiker, @dreamer2000at, @100peaks along with our friends Ben and Soph. Great trip! I’ll try to get a few more pics out before the end of the year;-)

Had a great week on the Grand Sawtooth Loop Trail in Idaho with some great friends. This is Sawtooth Lake, and I was absolutely torched when I took this photo after climbing straight up for eight hours;-) Epic week!

Six friends. Six days. Sixty-five miles. The Grand Sawtooth Loop is complete!

This was a beautiful but tough trail. Had a blast, and looking forward to a post-trip burger tonight.
