Sam Hunter ( @sam_hunter13 ) sharing more pictures from ‘Helicopter to 226’

The project centres around the complexities of my relationship with my Father, who following a cycling accident in 2021 is currently coming to terms with lower body paralysis.

To contextualise the body of work, I used an excerpt from my diary, written on the last day I saw my dad before the accident:

"I watch him out of my bedroom window as he cuts the garden grass. He walks differently this time, and I can see his hands waver over blooms and bushes as he moves back and forth. Up and down. He walks to the flower bed, and cuts two handfuls from my mother's patch. Something so beautiful, taken for another.
I'm going back home tomorrow. Funny that I call there home now rather than here."

‘Helicopter to 226’ was exhibited at @docphotusw 2022 grad show @packed_lunch_exhibition in Cardiff.

More images from "γράφειν" (Graphein) self published through @103books in 2021.

The body of work was conceived after being tasked with photographing 'community' as part of my second year studiyng @docphotusw . The challenge of this project was having to make it during nationwide lockdowns due to Coronavirus, obviously making it very difficult to engage in any social/community settings.

To me, it only made sense to document a subculture already operating under the premise of illegality, and to highlight how little the activities of these individuals had been affected by the pandemic.

Hello all! Sam Hunter here ( @sam_hunter13 )

I’d like to say a huge thanks to @ffotogallery for this opportunity to share my work with you guys!

For those who aren’t familiar, I am a visual artist and bookmaker from the West Midlands, where I currently reside having spent the last 3 years studying @docphotusw in Cardiff.

Over the next 5 days I’ll be sharing work from 2 projects I began during my time studying in Cardiff, as well as some new work I’ve been making during the last 12 months.

I begin with images from my body of work "γράφειν" (Graphein) which I self published through my imprint @103books in 2021. The project began during lockdown 2020, and follows individuals within the graffiti and ad-blocking community of South Wales during nationwide covid lockdowns, as they reclaim corporate advertising spaces and contribute to the disruption of a society rife with capitalist agendas.

Deriving from the origin of the term graffiti, the title stems from the Greek meaning of "to write" which describes the process of scratching through one layer to reveal another beneath it.
