POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I first met Dan around three years ago when he was struggling to find the right car. A mutual friend from @vwgolfmk2ownersclub / @southeastmk2golfs put us in touch and the brief was simple:

“Find me the best GTI possible for my budget — I don’t really know what I should be looking for.”

Safe to say, we found a good one.

A very tidy 1988 Atlas Grey Mk2 Golf GTI 16V with around 100k miles — solid, honest and, most importantly, a genuine 16V. It needed a few jobs here and there, but the foundations were exactly right.

Dan had always wanted a GTI, largely inspired by growing up around his father’s various VW projects over the years. Once the car was home, he slowly began putting his own stamp on it.

Chris @bstarwheels supplied a stunning set of RA wheels — 16” with ET35 and ET25 offsets — wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres in 195/45/16. Matt at @trackslag_com supplied one of his legendary stainless exhaust systems, while Andy at BD Engineering carried out a full K-Jet rolling road setup alongside Martin at @grey_goose_restorations replacing the WUR. Additionally, @thebeast_20vt sorted out various other items such as the gear linkage rebuild and servicing.

The result is exactly what a Mk2 GTI should be — usable, sorted and properly enjoyable to drive.

Stories like this are exactly why getting the right advice early on matters. Finding a genuinely good Mk2 GTI today is becoming increasingly difficult, especially for buyers who may not know the common pitfalls, originality concerns or what really separates a good car from an expensive mistake.

At Stirrup Automotive, the focus is always on helping clients source the best possible car for their budget — whether that’s a modern performance model or a cult classic icon like this. The right car from the outset not only makes ownership far more enjoyable, but has the potential to prove to be a smart long-term investment as values continue to strengthen.
