We’re now less confused but more worried. We’ve heard the rumors: sheep dogs are vicious, they’ll do anything to protect the flock. You don’t want to have a run-in with one. And now here we are, three on two in the canines’ favor. All three trot towards us.

When they’re about an arms length away we take a leap of faith and stick out our hands. They stiff and lick us like normal dogs. Gingerly we reach out and pet them, like normal humans.

The beasts descend on us in a flurry of movement. Tails oscillating rapidly, wet noses on skin, fur brushing legs, paws landing on waists. All three are circling and jumping up on us in pure pup excitement. This is broken up by the occasional play-biting and rough-housing with each other. Reveling in this unforeseen moment, we enjoy the attention as much as they do. We give them all of the pets and scratches. They give us company in this barren wasteland.

🫘09/05 mile 1629.5, 22 miles, one of the most brutal days I’ve had on trail: zero sleep, shit air quality, lots of vert, and lots of pain in me hip annnnd it got worse, I stopped to pee & realized I needed to deploy the menstrual cup but it was buried in my pack so I figured I’d grab it when I stop for water, I get to the water a mile later and it starts POURING rain and pelting me with hail… so i was soaked with blood & water due to a fancy lil process called capillary action…. Not optimal conditions for maintaining a positive mindset, but I still got beans on me so at least I have that, as the storm passed an elk bugled in the distance which felt magical, had to crawl out of the trenches for all the dirt bikes blasting past me, intended to do another 15ish miles but there was no way that was gunna happen with how much pain my hip was causing, camped by a very magical spring, heard something get shot in the distance, very very cold night of no sleep

🫘09/06 big rock campground, 25 miles, delirium, saw a pine marten hopping around in the trees, made it to grand lakes and reunited with the homies, I was intending to head to Denver to rest for a few days but honestly I don’t remember what happened bc I was so overtired & next thing I knew, I was hiking again… which went very poorly, slow moving bc of the pain & then it started raining… and I couldn’t figure out where everyone was camping and my brain wasn’t working at all and I just kinda had a lil freak out, pony appeared to retrieve me, we almost got ran over by a bull moose charging across the road, Tarzan was doing some more trail magic for us and even brought me veggie options to grill up, I was gifted a thick memory foam pad to sleep on and FINALLY slept for a few hours (after the wedding shindig stopped blasting their shitty music)

This year, our Hikerkind Athletes completed thru-hikes, faced fears, and overcame injuries, all in pursuit of what they love most: being outside. → Swipe through to join us in celebrating some of the women who inspire us mile after mile.

You might be thinking, so what? You skipped a fire closure, for all intents and purposes. That’s not a big deal, and in fact encouraged and fully acceptable in the thru-hiking community. A hike completed in-full with the exception of fire closures still “counts” as completed. But you probably don’t know my track record. My purism.

The definition of a thru-hike, afterall, is to hike a trail in its entirety within a single year’s time. I wasn’t able to do that on the CDT, and I’ll be honest, it still kind of bothers me.

I’m working on accepting my CDT hike, exactly as it was. Every thru-hike is unique, and every year it’s done in is unique. I had to accept hiking during Covid on the AT. I had to accept flip flopping on the PCT. Those were my unique experiences that came with challenges and grief for what I had thought the hike would be before setting foot on trail.

The CDT forced me to release my death grip on my purist definition of what a thru-hike is.

🫘08/25-26 Rawlins, 71 miles, at 420am we started the 420-69-miles-from-the-shepherds-trailer-to-rawlins-in-loving-memory-of-mike-posner-challenge, morning miles flew by, awesome sunrise, found pyro, full circle, joy, and midnight at the first poopy water source in an HMA, had a massive squad boppin down the road bumpin’ party music, saw wild horses, pronghorns, cows, and horny toad lizards, we really lucked out with the weather bc it was overcast, heaps and I experienced our hair standing up from a thunderstorm so that was fun, 64 miles in 24 hours, had to hop a barbed wire fence to get some water, in the final stretch pony and heaps were starting to get a lil loopy tired so I knew what I had to do… threw on Charlie xcx to power to town :p made it to a soccer field where we collapsed, pony, heaps, and whiskers took a nap while I arranged our hotel and grabbed some hot cocoa as motivation to make the most difficult journey of our lives (walking 1.4 miles to the econo lodge) we passed out and were cozy lazy all day

🫘08/27 zero, the econo lodge was conveniently next to a city market and all the fast food so we didn’t have to walk far, my bad hip and bad toe were being bad (randomly… def had nothing to do with hiking like a crazy person), crazy crazy thunderstorms, watched cheesy hallmark movies while the kiddos got day drunk

🫘08/28 water cache sage creek road, 27 miles, cursed cursed long paved road walk, met the coolest biker, Lobster (actually a thru hiker but on a bike), found some cans of Mountain Dew on the side of the hwy which tasted very hot and old, was gifted a bottle of Arizona iced tea, we lucked out with weather again bc it was overcast - thank goodness bc the road walk would have been miserable otherwise, water caches were stocked, our pace slowed down bc we were doing trivia while we walked and I learned we have a solid trivia team (alone I wouldn’t stand a chance….)

Some of the extras that aren't just amazing views! Shared some really great times with some awesome people out there!

People started running. RUNNING down the plank pathway in excitement, phones in hand, to get closer to the geyser.

While I don’t necessarily agree with running mere feet from scalding water, I do fully appreciate the enthusiasm. Witnessing humans witnessing nature with wonder is always going to be a highlight for me. It’s actually awesome to know that hot water exploding from the ground is so entertaining and awe-inspiring to people.

Consider my faith in humanity a tad bit restored.

1 year ago today I completed the Pacific Crest Trail

Truly the adventure of a lifetime.

So much has happened in the past year but I’m so grateful for all the memories, the growth, the people, the places. The opportunity to reclaim myself through this journey.

The PCT has been calling me back and I’m extremely thankful to be able to reflect on it all in the places it happened.

1 year ago I finished hiking the PCT and today is my first day teaching students outdoor education right alongside it. Talk about a full circle (miss u @1800araceli 🫶🏼)

The trail provided me so much and it continues to provide in real life which is all I ever wanted. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey
