GLOBAL ROOTS CANVAS 🖼️— made by artists, shaped by people 💕

Looking back at these moments, what stays with us isn’t only the finished exhibition — it’s the people around it.

The artists sharing their practice.
Communities taking part.
Conversations happening beside the work.
People meeting, making, listening, responding and leaving their own traces behind.

Across 24 workshops in Manchester and Greater Manchester, Global Roots Canvas travelled through community spaces, cultural institutions and galleries before coming together through our two exhibitions @1853studios and @bridge5mill .

For us at DIPACT, this is what community-led creativity can look like: artists as leaders, communities as participants rather than simply audiences, and art becoming a reason to gather, connect and belong.

This little film holds some of those memories — the artworks, the people, the encounters, and the shared canvas we created together.

Thank you to our five incredible artists, our participants, volunteers, supporting artists, venues, partners and every person who became part of the journey.

And thank you to Arts Council England @aceagrams for helping make Global Roots Canvas possible.

Many hands. Many stories. Many roots. One shared canvas. ✨

Exhibition Announcement - Points Of Departure

4th - 6th December 2026

Eight artists, eight very different practices, one point of departure. “Points of Departure” reunites
eight artists, almost exactly one year after they graduated from the Master of Fine Art course at
Central St Martins Art School in London. Now they are back together at the other end of a year, and
the better end of the country. Each has been on their own artistic journey, navigating life, and
evolving their practice, from oil painting, to sculpture, to digital art, to performance, exploring themes
from death, feminism, climate change, and social injustice. Visit Mill 2 Gallery, 1853 Studios and
Gallery to answer the question: what a year of being
an artist in the UK can do to someone?

Last chance to see our Studio Artist Wayne Smith's collection of life drawings and a chance to own some original art.

Wayne has successfully sold 11 pieces at our last count and has had huge success in his week long exhibition. It's been such a pleasure to host his work and we can't wait for the next one.

We also realised on a sunny day you can see #jodrellbank - the view never ceased to amaze.

We’re back 1853 Studios tomorrow, 20th October between 3-5pm for October’s Third Space Oldham event. This month we’ll be asking the businesses and creatives in the room about the challenges they face so that we can identify solutions from within the room.

Third Space Oldham is a networking event, it brings people together but it’s also about finding solutions, creating opportunities and ensuring business and creatives work in sync to address their own unique challenges.

It’s exciting to look at things a new way and try to unlock more of the potential in Oldham. We’d love you to join us.

About last week…
So last week I was not good, I had what I know realise was a series of cluster headaches resulting in a migraine which wiped me out and meant I had to cancel several classes 😢 I hate cancelling and so I was so pleased that by Friday I was feeling more human again and able to run my Kinusaiga workshop on Saturday in my art room at @1853studios .
I couldn’t choose between the lovely creations everyone made, so in an unprecedented deduction by the judging panel (me and the cats) I have awarded artwork of the week to all five guests!!!
Well done all, you really made me smile and ended my week on a high 😘

Only two days left of Global Roots Canvas @bridge5mill

Someone who visited the exhibition said to me:
“Every time I come into the space, I notice something new.”

I keep thinking about that.

Because Global Roots Canvas @dipactmcr both @1853studios and @bridge5mill , was never only about finished work on a wall. It was about workshops, participation, live making, conversations, and people continuing to shape the work while the exhibition itself was happening.

We also gathered here as a community — to eat, create, celebrate and simply be together. People from different backgrounds, cultures and experiences, sharing the same space.

Art that keeps moving.
Work that keeps changing.
People leaving traces.
And all of us becoming part of the same canvas.

As an artist, I think life is like that too — we keep adding marks, memories, people and experiences.

And perhaps the beauty is that we never really see everything at once. We return, we look again, and we notice something new — in the artwork, in each other, and sometimes in ourselves.

Different roots. Different stories. One shared canvas.

Two days left at Bridge 5 Mill. ✨

Many thanks to amazing artists @mahrokh_mofid_nakhaei @vian.k.hussein @k.a.emily @dariaa.pro @gloriasaya77
Curated by @soody_art
And also supporting artists volunteers and our partners and venues.
