Fatema Abdoolcarim is an Indian-Pakistani Hong Konger who makes films and writes. Her films have been shown internationally, including at Locarno Film Festival, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and Osaka Asian Film Festival. 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦 is her debut collection of poetry, and was a Poetry Book Society Spring Choice. She lives in the Baltic Sea, on the island of Bornholm.⁣

Kym Deyn is a writer and editor. Their debut collection folkish was published by Nine Arches in 2026 and was made a Poetry Book Society Recommendation. Their pamphlets include Dionysia published by Verve Poetry Press, and Unfurl, a collaborative fiction experiment. They have been widely published in anthologies and journals for their poetry and prose, including 𝘖𝘹𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘺, 𝟷𝟺 𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘮𝘴 and 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘯𝘴, and are the recipient of a Jerwood Fellowship from New Writing North. They run The Braag CIC, a poetry and speculative fiction press.⁣
⁣
Megan Pattie’s writing explores subjects ranging from the Gothic, mythology, and the natural world, to food, mental health, and small moments of wonder. She is a previous Foyle Young Poet, and has been published in a variety of journals, as well as anthologies from Eibonvale Press, The Emma Press, Fragmented Voices, Dreich, and the Black Light Engine Room, who also published her pamphlet, Tracts. Megan’s debut collection 𝘉𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘢 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯 was published in February 2026 by Broken Sleep Books.

Happy Bookshop Day!

After spending the morning at the @erwordfest, it would‘ve been rude not to pop into a bookshop to mark the occasion. So I paid a lovely visit to @thebeverleybookshop, a gorgeous independent, family-run bookshop right in the heart of this beautiful market town.

With almost 10,000 books on the shelves, there’s plenty to get lost in here. I was particularly impressed by their selection of translated fiction and huge range of signed new releases, alongside plenty of special editions, backlist favourites, local authors, and more besides.

Naturally, I couldn’t leave empty-handed and picked up a copy of #they by Danish author Helle Helle, translated by Martin Aitken and published by @akoyapublishing.

Bookshop Day is a national campaign run by @booksaremybag, and a brilliant reminder of just how important our high street bookshops are. Not just as places to buy books, but as spaces for discovery and community. Whether it’s your regular local or somewhere new you’ve stumbled across, there’s always something special about spending time in an indie bookshop.

A big thank you to the team at Beverley Bookshop for such a lovely visit. And don’t let the empty photos fool you, the place was packed!

A huge congratulations to Anne Carson, winner of the 2026 @nobelprize in Literature!

The Canadian poet, essayist and translator becomes only the 19th woman to receive the award since it was established in 1901, joining previous laureates including Annie Ernaux, Olga Tokarczuk and Alice Munro.

At 76, Carson has spent over four decades pushing the boundaries of literature, moving between poetry, prose, translation and classical mythology to create something entirely her own. From Autobiography of Red to Nox, her writing continues to challenge our ideas about language and storytelling.

A particularly good excuse to revisit The Gender of Sound, published by @silver.press in April 2025 as part of their @spiralhouseeditions Portals series.

In this fascinating essay, Carson explores how women’s voices have been judged, controlled and silenced throughout history. From ancient Greek mythology to Margaret Thatcher, via Freud and Gertrude Stein, she examines how high-pitched voices, laughter and public expressions of emotion have long been associated with disorder, weakness and even danger.

At its heart is a question of who gets to speak, who gets listened to and why. Carson challenges us to reconsider the relationship between gender, power and the sounds we make.

Consider this your excuse to rediscover one of contemporary literature’s most inventive voices!

Such a great day meeting people and visiting places from the book.
I've been to the Cluny for a meeting and to take photos outside, which is where Molly's day of actionism starts from. (If you've read Molly McFlynn Goes Rogue already you'll know what I mean)

Lovely to hear about all the exciting plans Sean has at Radio Ouseburn - we could have talked for hours about the power of community and coming together in creativity.

The City Farm, which is actually a community garden in the book, and the place where Molly volunteers with Jez, her boyfriend, in the story, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Amazing to think this has been bringing the world of animals and organic gardening to this corner of town for so long. @ouseburnfarmnewcastle

Then it was up the hill to Stepney Bank Riding Stables and a chat with Heather. If you've already read Molly McFlynn Goes Rogue can you name two ways the Riding Stables help Molly on her day of action?

Some evenings remind you why you write.

A huge thank you to 1b Books for hosting such a warm and memorable evening, and to everyone who came along to talk, listen, ask questions, share stories — and take a copy of On the Crest of a Wave home with them.

Writing a novel is, for the most part, a solitary business. You spend months — years, sometimes — alone with people who exist only in your imagination, never quite knowing whether what moves you on the page will move someone else.

Then an evening like this happens.

Real people. Real conversations. Readers telling you what stayed with them, what made them think, what touched something in their own lives. And suddenly the distance between writing a book and someone reading it becomes wonderfully small.

On the Crest of a Wave is a story about love and grief, about what we leave behind and what we carry forward — and about those unexpected encounters that can alter the course of a life.

Thank you to everyone who has become part of its journey. It means more than you might imagine.
