In the beginning of August, I was able to experience an initiative called takeoff this initiative, Inherently challenges, the systematic ecosystems that make it hard for men of color to participate in higher academia in general, This reminded me of my brother who’s still working on getting his GED and he Reminded me of my little cousin, he ran away from school every single week. and maybe that’s not a lot but it’s weird that it happens twice right. it’s got me thinking. thinking about my experience and the ones that surround me something that was prominent in discussion was that the things that made it hard for me to show up in a man’s world where making it hard for men as well. I Learned a new word femmephobia, which is the aversion to feminine traits. this bit solidified a perspective that masculinity or the perception or bias of what masculinity should be can make it sort of a performance and when does began to cut at your authenticity This work is generations old I believe even centuries. And to participate in a change that hosts something like this is deeply healing #poet

Black men,

We owe it to ourselves to stretch beyond what’s familiar. Every rep, page turn, and hard conversation builds more than muscle. It builds mindset. Greatness lives in the unknown. Challenge yourself. Sharpen your body. Expand your thinking. Discomfort is not your enemy. It’s your evolution

Capoeira is more than flips and kicks. Capoeira is rhythm, resistance, and self-respect.
Born from the fight for freedom, it teaches Black men to move with purpose, flow with power, and honor the ancestors in every step. This isn’t just martial arts.
Special thank you to Mestrando Neto Bacana (@a.neto_bacana) and Dr. Travis Baptiste (@mindwithmatter_fit) for reconnecting our young men to their culture.

PROVERBS 17:17

“A friend loves at ALL TIMES, and a BROTHER is BORN for a time of ADVERSITY”

What is a brother without accountability? Without integrity? Without honesty? Without discipline? On Saturday we did the hard work of building not only ourselves but each other by getting up at 5:00am, and making sure to hold our brothers accountable to do the same, as we prepared for our 6:00am run.

Why 6:00am? Because college is challenging—as a matter of fact, LIFE IS CHALLENGING. We have to do things we don’t want to do, don’t feel equipped or prepared to do, or maybe are even afraid to do. And we still have to make it happen. When we intentionally and proactively PRACTICE DISCIPLINE and do the work to be held accountable, we build the building blocks of our character so that when life throws challenges at us we can smile in the face of adversity.

After our morning run we had our 7:00am capoeira and fitness class hosted by @legacytrainingcenter and Mestrando Neto Bacana a.neto_bacana and Mind With Matter Fitness by Dr. Travis Batiste @mindwithmatter_fit . Capoeira is a martial art deeply entrenched in the history of the African diaspora and the formerly enslaved people of Brazil. We believe that it is important not only to have sharp minds, but courageous hearts and empowered bodies to face the challenges of being men in this time of our society.

We thank Dr. Travis and the Legacy Training family led by Mestrando Bacana for sharing their mentorship, knowledge, and guidance with us this year for our Magnificent Male Experience, and look forward to continuing to building our partnership with them as Xavier University of Louisiana.

This is not about a moment, this is about transformation to change a paradigm. This—is a Renaissance. You can’t break me down, you can’t take me down. No matter what we will rise. We are. Magnificent.

Welcome to the FIVE-O-FORE ⛳️

Black men on the fairways, we wrapped up our Friday introduction to the 2025 Magnificent Male Experience with a great opportunity to learn from none other than alum Dr. Alejandro Perkins about the value of golf and business. Too often certain opportunities and experiences are kept exclusive from Black people such as the sport of golf and all the access that comes with it. As the saying goes, real business happens on the fairways. 🏌🏾‍♂️💫

Our cohort this year met with Dr. Perkins and the other coaches who are a part of the Xavier University of Louisiana family, as they discussed the value of connectivity, networking, and pure, Black joy. There was food, there was games, there was community. I hope you have half as much fun watching this as we did being there—because we had a ball…and we hit a few too! 😤😎🤝🏾

Afterwards the mentees gathered at the Mike’s for fellowship around a sport that we all know and love, backyard basketball. Keep an eye out as we continue to share our moments and experiences from our Magnificent Male Experience Weekend. Please share, tag, and comment to keep the entire MME family connected and to share this experience with others who you know would benefit from this program.

Not able to make it this year? Don’t worry! As long as you are a high school junior or senior, you are eligible to be a part of the experience next year. Keep your eyes open for more information in the near future.

DAY 1: IDENTITY, Pt. 1

ON THE FIRST DAY--THERE WAS JOY

The Magnificent Male Experience Weekend kicked off with a resounding welcome at the St. Mike's dormitory and in the University Center Ballroom.

We welcomed mentees, parents, and friends with cheers, chants, and--DANCING?! Well, some people danced.

Families and mentees attended informative sessions and had a wonderful talk from Leadership Fellow Greg Fassitt (professional football play for New Orleans Saints and Super Bowl Champion), and then parents attended informative sessions hosted by university administrators while staff and mentors assigned mentees to the groups they were drafted to.

And yes we do mean DRAFTED. Each mentee was selected with intention, purpose, and meaning. After the sessions, they had mentor moments to talk about who they are and build rapport with their groups as well as go on a campus tour.

This is just part 1! Stay tuned for part 2...

RUN THAT BACK…

LET’S DO IT AGAIN!! 🔊🗣

On Thursday we kicked off the Magnificent Male Experience Weekend with our last mentor training. The mentors went through a month-long virtual training where we talked about etiquette, expectations, emergencies, values, culture, and creativity. 📝

We expected a lot more from the mentors this year as we continue to grow our program, but what is expectation without EMPOWERMENT? @bro.desmond.xula Bro. Desmond Collins and Mr. Zachary Williams carefully crafted this year’s trainings to empower the mentors to be the best leaders and culture creators that they could be.

Take a look at a behind the scenes video of this year’s mentor training. Ya’ll think they ever got the Magnificent cheers and chants together? We know one thing they DEFINITELY came with—THE ENERGY. Thank you to all the mentors who showed up and showed out this year. BEST YEAR HANDS DOWN, as said by both the parents and the mentees!

Keep your eyes open for the recap of the rest of the weekend, and share with your folks so they don’t miss out on this exciting and amazing experience next year. 2026 is going to be a movie, trust us

It’s the night before Christmas 🎄

Well…not exactly, but it might as well be the same thing.

We’ve made it to the LAST DAY of the in-person 2025-2026 Magnificent Male Experience. We want to thank every speaker, every parent, every mentee, every mentor, every bus driver, every sanitation worker, every big brother or big sister who stepped in on campus, every staff member and administrator, and most importantly thank God for this experience.

It truly has been an amazing weekend, and we still have one day left. Who knows what the future holds? 👀

See everyone in the morning for our closing ceremony in the convocation center ballroom at 9:30 AM.

Science is the torch of Justice. @1flyymir

Honored to represent XULA at the Annual NASEM Gulf Cost Conference, where I presented our research on how air pollution in the gulf coasts triggers the biological cascade that induces Alzheimer’s disease.

Exposing IPSC derived neurons and neuroglial cells to air pollutants that occupy Louisiana show the accumulation of oxidative stress, tau phosphorylation, and amyloid beta protien which are all hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.

Our research challenges the notion that Alzheimer’s disease is purely genetic, exposing the toxic reality of environmental health disparities It is my hope that this research impacts future science and healthcare policy as it relates to environmental justice
