I’ll add something the video doesn’t. I wasn’t always the example of how to handle this either. I had a few conversations with coworkers where I confronted them directly at the kitchen table. And yeah, I said it to their face. But I also cussed, got heated, and made a scene. You can confront someone directly and still be wrong in how you do it. That’s important. The answer to gossip, disrespect, and toxic behavior isn’t becoming louder, more aggressive, or more toxic yourself. There’s a difference between standing up for yourself and losing control. There’s a difference between being direct and being disrespectful. And there’s a difference between having courage and just wanting to win the argument. I’ve been on both sides of that. So this post isn’t me pretending I handled everything perfectly. I didn’t. It’s me looking back with a little more perspective and realizing we can do better. Call people directly. Have the uncomfortable conversation. Stand up for yourself and other people. Use the proper channels when something actually crosses the line. But keep your own side of the street clean while you do it. Because being right about what you’re confronting doesn’t automatically make you right in how you confront it. That applies at the firehouse. And probably everywhere else too. I’m Dan Herring. Let’s go. One more day.

Are we training for the reality of the job? When everything goes wrong on the fireground, seconds matter. Yet, 2 out of 3 departments aren’t conducting annual Mayday scenario training. True readiness isn’t about checking a box once during academy; it’s about continuous, realistic preparation. Command staff and training officers: let’s change this statistic. Put a scenario-based Mayday drill on the calendar for this year. #stationiq #senario #firstresponders #mayday #tactical

Most firefighters will maybe see this call once in their career. A tree trimmer. Working alone. 60 feet up. No partner. No safety net. In seconds, tons of dead fronds collapse onto him compressing his chest, blocking his airway, bending him in directions the human body wasn’t meant to bend. And your crew is standing at the base of the tree trying to figure out what to do next. Capt. Matt Kearney of Palm Springs Fire Department has been on these calls. He wrote the playbook. Palm Tree Rescue Operations now live in the Tree Rescue Training Room. 🔗 app.stationiq.co @mkearney444 | #firefighter #technicalrescue #fireservice #stationiq #treerescue palmsprings
