Canicula, invece, segna

‘A Ball, A Wall and a Little More’ from Union Issue 08

There are endless ways to start a game. A ball could be kicked across the pavement, thrown against a wall or sent astray in the direction of a passerby. Before the stadium, the scoreboard and the spectacle, many games begin with much less: somewhere to play.

It was this idea that drew Milan-based architecture studio 2050+ to the frontón, essentially a wall built to play against, central to pelota vasca, a family of Basque ball games. 2050+ conceived the fronton for the 12th edition of Concontrico, the International Festival of Architecture and Design in Logrono. Their project Frontones Danzantes temporarily turned the city’s functioning Revell.n car park into an open-air sporting ground, with three mobile frontones for pelota, basketball and football.

In Issue 08, @absolutelyhilary studies @2050.plus’s project Frontones Danzantes as a bid to reinstall simplicity and function in sport architecture and design.

Sneak peak from the upcoming video documentation of CANICULA, where 2050+ architects Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli e Francesca Lantieri expand upon the concept of the exhibition’s scenography

Developed in close relation with the content of the works, as well as with the architecture and history of the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto, the exhibition design becomes an additional perceptive and narrative element in the overall experience of the exhibition, starting from the use of materials that evoke and make manifest the erosive action of muggy weather and sunlight. The exhibition route comprises the environments that house the works, as well as rooms and spaces that appear isolated and protected, as if in an effort to stem the destructive potential of damaging external agents. And it is the staging of a hypothetical dialogue with a threatening outside world that guides the use of light throughout the exhibition – a light that hints, at different levels of intensity, at an intolerable climate bearing down on the space of the exhibition

CANICULA is open until November 22 at the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto in Venice and features 8 new site-specific video installations commissioned from Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti, Roman Khimei and Yarema Malashchuk, Janis Rafa, P. Staff, Wang Tuo, Yuyan Wang, and Maya Watanabe

WORKSHOP SEASON 2026 | Scrap-Kammer: A Cabinet of Curiosities

In this workshop, participants explored the taxonomy of the Scrap-Kammer, treating discarded materials and production leftovers as valuable resources rather than waste. By collecting, classifying, and assembling fragments found across Boisbuchet, they designed and built a contemporary cabinet of curiosities that functioned as both an archive and a working device. The workshop invited participants to investigate architecture as an operational framework rather than a finished object: a device that recorded processes, hosted residues, and revealed the intelligence of making.
