@swisplab was honoured to be awarded a 2025 CHASS Distinctive Work Prize for Tipping Point Stories: Youth Climate Futures 2024 – Voice of Change at COP29
This recognition belongs to an extraordinary international team: @kateycoleman, Dr Sacha Healy, @23angelas, @criticalcassie, @kriagg, @jagathv, Prof Eri Saikawa, and to the hundreds of young people across Australia, India and the United States who trusted us with their stories.

Together, through SWISP Lab, we asked a simple question: What is the moment you realised climate change had become personal?

Those responses became more than stories. They became artworks, data, zines, performances and conversations that travelled from classrooms and communities to the global stage at @cop29_azerbaijan

This award is also a reminder that arts-based and artistic research matters. Creative practice doesn’t simply communicate climate change, it creates spaces where people can attend differently, listen more carefully and imagine futures together.

Thank you to CHASS for this recognition, and to everyone who has been part of this journey. This is only the beginning.

💚

What a an amazing beginning to the festival!

DISTRACTION to ACTION has officially begun, and we started the exhibition with a team walkthrough this morning!

For many young people, there is no memory of a world untouched by climate change. Climate crisis is not a future event; it is the backdrop of their lives.

Over the past four years, @swisplab has worked alongside young people across Melbourne, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Atlanta and beyond, creating spaces where climate stories can be shared, held and transformed. Together, we have designed games, speculative methods and living inquiry practices that invite participants to sit with the complexities of climate catastrophe and transmediate those stories across drawing, making, writing, textiles, conversation, poetry and play.

We warmly invite you to spend time with our research exhibition throughout the day!

I'm so excited to have a new article published in the International Critical Childhood Policy Studies Journal (ICCPSJ) 👏👏👏

Co-written with Dr. Angela Molloy Murphy, @23angelas this article explores worldmaking as a pedagogical and ontological process through a long-term, arts-based inquiry with a kindergarten community on Dja Dja Wurrung Country, in Bendigo, Australia.

Drawing on walking, mapping, and creative mark-making events, this project foregrounds children’s capacities to generate culture, co-create knowledge, and propose ways of being-with Place (Country et al, 2016; Haraway, 2016; Nxumalo, 2019).

Through stories of practice, including encounters with Frank the wild lizard, a construction site, and the emergence of specific imagery in a collective artwork, this work positions Place [and materials] as a pedagogical contact zone (Hamm & Boucher, 2017).

We wonder: How might we live-with children as active worldmakers in times of ongoing colonial and ecological disruption? And, How might we make (and find) sanctuary as home in an imperfect world?
---------------

Immensely grateful for the co-labour of Journal Co-Editors Mimi Bloch and Prof. Beth Blue Swadner, and the Special Issue Editors Dr. Janica Kroeger and Dr. Iris Berger for their support, patience and belief in this work (and of course the children, teachers and more-than-human kin who showed us the way).

This has been about 18months in the writing/wrangling...a huge effort of which I am so proud!

See link in b io for PDF download. We hope you enjoy!

We're thrilled to get started this month asking: How do we want to support each other's freedom? What's the relationship between boundaries and freedom? Who is worthy of your trust? We're looking forward to reading @thetimothysnyder and hearing from @23angelas - join us? #storyworkshop #educationfordemocracy #antifascisteducation #ece #playfulinquiry #educationforfreedom #reggioinspired #aestheticdimension #reggioapproach

I’m thankful to be partnering with Lyrebird Preschool in this ongoing paper play and inquiry project. We’re excited to learn about children’s lines of inquiry through relationships with paper. Thanks to Kelly and Angela for their inspiring work in this space.

SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY HAPPENS when children are exposed to focused arts-based inquiry.

💛 Creative expression through making, channels a unique collective voice.

💛 Thinking-made-visible and learning-made-tangible via multi-modal connection, intersection and intra-action.

💛 Children’s worlds become embodied-with/through/of Place and materials that story, map and unravel in urban places.

These experiential layers of emergent thinking, making, doing create their own theories and generate their own curriculum.

Our Place Our World is a project bursting into the world alongside the young children co-creating it.

These magnificent artworks are a snapshot of the more-than-human kin living alongside their kinderworlds and the map lines that connect us across the City of Greater Bendigo.

I installed these magnificent artworks in the windows of Bendigo Bank (89 Mitchell St, Bendigo).

They are double sided, so can be viewed in their entirety during business hours:
Mon - Fri 9.30am - 4pm
Or 24hrs through the windows!
Until 8th Dec

I’m super-duper proud of this iteration 🙌

A huge shout out to:
- Children, teachers (lizards & butterflies) at Dr. Harry Little Kindergarten & Annie Galvin Early Learning Centre 🫶

- Angela Molloy Murphy @23angelas for pedagogical companioning the 2024 iteration of the project

- Lena Mitchell @lena__mitchell Learning Manager at Bendigo Art Gallery for children’s learning creative conversations @bendigoartgallerylearn

- Rohan Phillips Arts Officer, City of Greater Bendigo Venues and Events @cityofgreaterbendigo @creativebendigo for seeing the value in children’s visibility in the city

We’re only getting started! 👏👏

A fun morning documenting the current iteration of ‘Our Place Our World’ exhibition at Exhibit B space in the Bendigo Central Arcade.

Thanks to the technical genius of @leonschoots Leon Schoots Photography and a very large black backdrop, we managed to remove most reflections in a tricky-to-photograph space.

This project is so wonderful. It’s moving, changing and asking multiple questions-with children, Place and materials.

If you’re in Bendigo, there’s still a few days to check it out. (Inside the Central Arcade near Hoo-gah Cafe)

I bump out on Monday and then install another iteration of the artwork into the Bendigo Bank windows on Mitchell Street which will be on view 10 Nov - 8 Dec (inside bank hours or 24hrs through the window!)

This work is about children being visible in the City of Greater Bendigo and is a listening-with and a deep honouring of their ideas and theories of the world 💚

The 38th InSEA world Congress has been incredible!

Four days packed full of exceptional research and teaching across arts education by people from all over the world.

Held at Palacký University Faculty of Arts in Olomouc (a stunning building full of incredible lecture halls and studios). Alongside a huge program of concurrent sessions we also had a choice of multiple hands on making workshops which were a highlight —indeed a programming and organizational feat of mighty proportions!

It was a delight to present at this conference for the first time. I shared the work I’m doing with a kindergarten in Bendigo alongside the Bendigo Art Gallery and the city itself. With pedagogical companioning-with my brilliant colleague Dr Angela Molloy Murphy @23angelas , This is a humble little project that seems to be piquing some interest, and it’s something I’m very proud of.

Before I head off on the final stop of my conference Odyssey, here’s a snippet of what has been a magnificent gathering of like-minds 👏

I’m feeling so proud of the incredible team I work with in Visual Arts and Design Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Melbourne.

This World Congress week, my amazing colleagues are leading powerful, creative, and future-facing workshops at the InSEA World Congress showcasing the depth and innovation of art and design education in studioFive and Australia on a global stage. From speculative pedagogies to inclusive classroom practices, their sessions reflect the heart of what we do: fostering creativity, criticality, care, and connection.

I so wish I could be there in person to witness it all, and to support, to cheer, and to learn alongside them.

If you’re attending the Congress, please make sure you go along to their sessions. You’ll be in for something truly special as these are a/r/tographers and creative educators bring passion, research, and lived practice together in ways that make a real impact.

To my colleagues: I’m cheering from afar and so proud of the work you’re sharing with the world.

Thank you to @semannslattery for curating a conference that called us into responsibility, reminding us of our professional and ethical duty to advocate for children's rights. Inspire: An Uprising wasn’t just a gathering—it was a provocation, a reckoning, and a renewal.

Across four powerful keynotes and workshops, we were invited to reimagine, re-story, and rise.

🖤 Jane Vadiveloo | Children’s Ground
“Uprising is not an act of defiance—it’s a catalyst for growth.”
Jane urged us to honour the world's oldest education system by listening to and learning from First Nations knowledge. With conviction, she reminded us: the path to justice begins with connection, humanity, and truth-telling. A collective uprising—educators, families, and communities—can create systems that nurture rather than suppress.

🌱 Ben Mardell | Teacher, Researcher
From long-term inquiry to the radical act of imagination, Ben reminded us that solidarity must include the more-than-human world. Children are not separate from nature—they are part of it. Paying attention, he said, is a political act. “What we notice reflects what we value.”

🔥 Angela Malloy Murphy | Teacher, Researcher, Advocate
Angela reframed protest as pedagogy—inviting us to stay with the trouble and reimagine place as kin. With fierce tenderness, she called for relational ways of being rooted in justice, creativity, and radical presence. Through art, witness, and story, she reminded us that love and courage are not soft ideas, but radical necessities.

🧵 Kelly Goodsir | Educational Leader, Facilitator
Transformation is not a straight line. Through metaphors of roller coasters and patchwork quilts, Kelly honoured the difficult, emotional work of leading with authenticity. “Hope is a verb with its sleeves rolled up,” she said—calling educators to stitch stories of courage and care into the fabric of their practice.

✨These keynotes didn’t offer quick answers—but they offered something more powerful:
Curiosity. Courage. Complexity. Connection.
A collective call to uprise together—for justice, for joy, for children.

What now feels possible? What responsibility will you carry forward?
