POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

One chair. Two people.
A question of belonging.

What makes a JAGAH ours?
Is it the space we occupy,
the memories we hold,
the comfort we find,
or the parts of ourselves
we have nowhere else to leave?

What happens when the place
that gives me sukoon
becomes the place you long for?

Can I make room for you
without losing myself?

JAGAH BEGINS.

Haanh Hum (AHEAD Foundation) begins its second artist residency! Creation, collaboration, and exploration as we prepare for Jagah : our theatre production for the Abhivyakti City Wide Arts Festival.

We’re looking forward to spending time together, sitting with the questions that shape Jagah, and discovering what emerges when we create collectively.

Here’s to the process, the possibilities, and the many stories waiting to unfold.

We can’t wait to share Jagah with you all.

Spaces Sung into Existence.

In our Jagah Workshop, our participants broke into the Kannada janapada geethe "ಬಂದಿರಾ ನೀರಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿರೆ" / "Have you come to fetch water?"

We as a group hail from so many different places, bringing with us stories and songs and colours from each of them. All this goes so deep in our workshop Jagah/ space as we explore it means for us inside and out.

In villages, the well was never just a place to collect water. It was a place where women met, laughed, gossiped, rested, resisted, and built community.

Today, inside our Theatre of the Oppressed workshop, that well became our jagah again. Our women reclaimed space through memory, music, and each other's voices.

No rehearsal. No cue. Just a song that reminded us that sometimes the spaces we create together become home.

Jagah is where our voices find each other.

JAGAH | DAY 3

Independence Day. 🇮🇳

We began with a question: What does freedom mean to you?

From Azadi to shringar, we explored how we inhabit our bodies, how we make ourselves feel beautiful, and how much space we feel allowed to take.

Then came the question: “Tell me a place where you cannot be removed from.”

From our children, our homes, our values, ourselves.

Jahan se humein koi nahi nikal sakta.

Through games, movement and plays, stories of freedom became stories of everyday life, especially for women.

Something as ordinary as getting dressed became a theatrical act. A way of looking at the body. A way of asking what makes us feel beautiful and when we feel most like ourselves.

And we ended with something very special.

Haan Hum completed four years. ❤️

Four years of women making theatre, telling stories, taking space and creating their own jagah.

And JAGAH continues.

Day 2 of JAGAH

We spent time looking at Mark Rothko’s paintings, allowing the colours and large fields of colour to enter our bodies and create sensations, memories and emotions without having to name them immediately. From there, we moved into exploring paint ourselves, letting colour become another way of expressing what we were feeling.

We worked with movement, soundscapes and individual stories. A bangle became a memory. A gesture became a story. A sound became a space. We explored how shringar and akelapan could live in the body, in a room, in a relationship and in the spaces between people.

Through improvisations, we slowly began creating a sequence. Individual actions, sounds, positions and stories started coming together, not as a fixed performance yet, but as something that was beginning to take shape.

JAGAH continues to grow through these experiments, through what we remember, what we feel, what we paint, what we hear and what we make together.

*Help bring 11 Women of Kamathipura to perform at India's Biggest Stage*

Who are we? We are Haan Hum. We are an all-women community arts collective based in Kamathipura, Mumbai. Our collective is made up of sex workers and women artists who come together through theatre, painting, clay, movement, and storytelling. We started in 2022 with a small art workshop and a big question: what happens when the sex workers of Kamathipura tell their own stories, in their own voices, through their own art? Four years later, we have our answer...

Day 1 of Jagah

Today we started with something very simple. Walking.

Walking slowly. Walking fast. Walking with pyaar. Walking maje mein. Walking when something is holding you back. Walking when you are trying to move but cannot. And finally, standing completely still.

From there we found four emotions.

Khushi. Gussa. Shringar. Akelapan.

And then the stories came.

A wedding in the rain. Dancing. Bhel puri with onions.

A dark house with no electricity. Being alone. Water filling the house during the monsoon. Three days without anyone to help.

Getting dressed in a sari for yourself. Kajal. Lipstick. Perfume. Looking into the mirror when you are sad.

A bell in the puja room. The ticking of a clock. Panting in fear.

A song. A particular posture. A change in the breath. A different feeling in the body.

We spent time listening to these stories and watching how an emotion can travel through the body, through a sound, through a space, through a memory.

We are beginning to see what a Jagah can become when it is made from our bodies, our memories, our sounds and the places we carry within us.

What does India mean to you?”

Yesterday, our Theatre of the Oppressed facilitator and mentor, Jaya Di — as she is fondly called by all of us — began with a deceptively simple question:

“What does India / Bharat mean to you?”

The room filled with stories, memories, contradictions, questions and possibilities.

Jaya Di asked us to place ourselves on the map of India.

What began as a conversation slowly became something more — a way of looking at where we come from, where we belong, and the many meanings we attach to a place we call home.

This was the beginning of our story development process for our new Theatre of the Oppressed production, “JAGAH” (जगह).

A story about place, belonging, identity and everything in between.

We’re still creating, questioning and finding our way.

Soon, we’ll announce where JAGAH will take us. ❤️

REST - RADICAL ACT OF FREEDOM.

Here, participants of Haan Hum, pause by the sea, simply as women at Leisure.

In a world that rarely grants them stillness, choosing to sit, laugh, breathe, and watch the horizon together is a quiet yet radical act of freedom.
