As the federal administration pushes to open California's coast to new offshore oil drilling and weaken longstanding coastal protections, we’re taking action to protect the ocean and the communities that depend on it.

For the first time in more than a decade, California is establishing new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), protecting an additional 15,000 acres of coastal waters and bringing us to 22.2% conserved on our way to our 30x30 goal!

What does that mean for Californians?

Healthier ocean ecosystems. Stronger protections for marine life. And a more resilient coast for the families and communities whose livelihoods, traditions and way of life depend on it.

These underwater refuges help kelp forests thrive, protect critical habitat for fish and other marine life, and support ocean health as climate change brings warmer waters.

And in a historic first, two of the new MPAs were proposed by California Native American Tribes, creating new opportunities for Tribal stewardship and recognizing generations of cultural connections to our coast.

And while Washington pushes for more drilling, California is choosing more protection.

On Friday, the Rangeland Trust was honored to be apart of the Grassland Nature-Based Solutions Summit.

The one-day event brought together ranchers, researchers, conservation partners, and land stewards to share practical, on-the-ground approaches to grazing management, restoration, and building productive, resilient rangelands.

Landowner partners Clayton Koopmann and Karen Sweet contributed their perspectives on panels, highlighting the value of collaboration and real-world experience in advancing conservation on working lands. CEO Michael Delbar moderated the conservation tools panel alongside Karen Sweet, helping facilitate discussion around strategies and resources that support landowners in their conservation efforts.

From supporting agriculture and wildlife habitat to strengthening the health and resilience of California’s communities, the event underscored the vital role grasslands play in the future of working lands and the importance of partnerships in sustaining these landscapes for generations to come.

We are proud to play a role in these meaningful and important conversations!

We participated in California Biodiversity Day 2026 and my photograph of a great blue heron swallowing its catch at Sweet Springs Nature Preserve in Los Osos was chosen as the featured photo (Observation #4) of the 60 plus observations. This is an infographic that 30x30 California (https://www.californianature.ca.gov) did and it was part of their blog post on iNaturalist. I was surprised that it was chosen as one of their featured photos.

🌎 California is leading the way in protecting our environment and expanding access to nature for generations to come.

We’re making big strides toward our ambitious goal of conserving 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030!

It was great to speak at California’s 30x30 Conference alongside @cagovernor Gavin Newsom, @canaturalresourcesagency Secretary Wade Crowfoot, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, and my colleagues @asmchrisrogers, @asmdamonconnolly, and @senatorarreguin

For me, this work starts in our neighborhoods. Growing up surrounded by more freeways than green spaces, I know how much a neighborhood park or a little bit of nature can mean to a family. That’s why I’ve proudly fought to bring millions of dollars in state funding back to our communities, especially in dense urban neighborhoods where access to parks and open space is too often limited.

A special thank you to the Tribal leaders, environmental advocates, and community members who have spent decades protecting our lands and fighting to make nature more accessible to everyone. Your leadership and dedication make this work possible. 🌿

🌿 30x30 UPDATE: California’s conservation progress!

We’re proud to share that the Coachella Valley is featured on the cover of California’s latest @30x30ca update! 🎉 A special thank you to our Associate Director, Diana Rosas, for capturing this moment of climate stewards hiking at Mount San Jacinto State Park.

So, can California conserve 30% of its lands by 2030? 🌎

Here’s where we stand as of June 2026:

🌱 27.1% of California’s lands are conserved and under long-term management.

🌊 21.9% of the state’s coastal waters are conserved.

🏞️ 1.023 million acres of land were added to conservation efforts in the past year.

🌿 More than 3.5 million acres of lands and coastal waters have been conserved since California released its Pathways to 30x30 Strategy in 2022.

These milestones reflect the power of sustained investment in conservation, restoration, and climate resilience.

With nearly $1.3 billion invested in nature-based solutions over the past four years, along with funding from California’s $10 billion Climate Bond, the state is making meaningful progress toward its 30x30 goal.

Hi! There are 200 people here now!! Not a lot a lot, but idk what I’m doing yet, and high key, that’s more than I expected so soon. It seems like most everyone is from around San Francisco, which is perfect because that’s where most of what I do happens and who I’ve been hoping to reach.

I’ve been working on increasing and improving urban green/open space and tree cover since college because I think everyone deserves an opportunity to connect with nature and receive the benefits of nature, no matter where they live.

I’m lucky to have made a career of this and that it allows me to be aware of and engaged in so many things. So, with this silly little IG, I hope to connect people to cool spaces and, if possible, drum up some support for them too. There’s a rich amount of natural resources around us, but there’s also a lot of work to be done to keep it that way! I don’t mean that in a negative way, but a hopeful one. Tending to nature isn’t the only way to push back on the world’s problems, but it is a good place to start.
