A Space Gallery is pleased to present Weiyuan Wang at Spectrum Chicago Art Fair 2026.

Weiyuan Wang (b. 2001, Taipei, Taiwan) is an artist currently based in New York, and received her MFA at Pratt Institute in 2026. Her practice is rooted in printmaking, where she explores duplication not only as a technical process, but as a conceptual and emotional framework.

Wei first trained in Chinese painting in Taiwan. After graduating, she worked as a freelance graphic designer across Taiwan and Japan, where her engagement with publishing introduced her to the logic of reproduction. How images circulate, multiply, and shift in meaning, these experiences led her to pursue printmaking. Her work often moves between two and three dimensions. She use the printing surface as something physical, holding traces of time, temperature, and transformation.

A Totebag Designed For Survival 💭

As flooding becomes more and more common across New York City infrastructure, climate change is quietly reshaping daily life. Designed by New York-based art collective @lifeline.nyc for NYC Climate Week 2026, LIFELINE was created to bring this new reality to light.

Presented as the first tote bag designed for survival, LIFELINE is both an act of protest and a public performance. Unassuming at first glance, a hidden flotation system easily transforms the bag into a life-jacket.

“We took the most ordinary object, a tote bag and reimagined it for a city on the front line of climate change," says Philip Le Brun, Artist & Creative Director.

Both a familiar object and a functional emergency response, LIFELINE invites us to consider: is extreme weather the new normal?

The first tote designed not for convenience, but for survival. At rest, it looks ordinary. Hidden inside is a flotation system adapted from life-jacket technology.

LIFELINE is an artifact, not a product. It’s not for sale. It exists as protest, performance, and public warning: a symptom of the world we’ve built, and an object that should never need to exist.
Made in New York by a collective of artists working at the intersection of design, protest, and climate. Everything you see was made by human hands, from the bag, to the visual identity, and every frame.

Do we really need more?

You know what I mean, look around. We are consuming resources beyond their capacity for renewal while, paradoxically, finding excuses to put one more thing out there. I wonder if we have lost the ability to distinguish real problems from manufactured ones.

Sitting with complexity, resisting the temptation to flatten layered problems into easy answers, just to pretend we can solve them. Maybe our role is not problem-solving after all, but problem-framing.
This project takes shape in this realm, as a symptom of the world we’ve built. A speculative rehearsal and an inquiry into the cultural and environmental conditions that could give rise to an object that should never need to exist, should never need to be designed.

One out of one, and completely human-made, from the bag to everything captured. No AI was used in this project. Lifeline is a conceptual project and creative experiment, not intended for commercial use.

In August, I got to return to Ox-Bow to take a two-week class: Glass-Blown Organics with @christenbaker_
I was able to bring my family for part of the stay—we hiked, climbed trees to alarmingly tall heights, and visited rock beach—and got to stay together in one of the my favorite cabins.

It was my first time blowing glass and I found it to be really challenging and also pretty thrilling. Christen made a batch from Michigan beach sand, which is rich in the glacial sediments copper and iron, which give it its blue-green color (the same sand source for Ball canning jars). I enjoyed playing with the extra not-yet-glass mixture she removed early from the furnace, using it as frit in various glacier-inspired experiments. I loved working on a team to help each of us realize our plans. The class and studio techs were all wonderful.

It was another intense and incredible two weeks. 🙌
