During the exhibition “Spirits in the Rice Field”, a performance by Yuko Uchida, in collaboration with @3space2move, was presented. Inspired by the folk belief that “seven spirits reside within a single grain of rice,” the performance introduced masks symbolizing seven elements: water, earth, wind, sun, clouds, insects, and farmers. Through the presence of these masks, the installation space was transformed into a temporary site of ritual. Masks are one of the artist’s primary modes of expression, historically used in Japan as a medium for connecting with spiritual beings and ritual practices. The performance became a moment where body and space, belief and memory, intersected.

A live performance transforms the installation into a contemporary ritual, where performers embody the seven spirits of rice through movement, sound, and presence. Three Space Tokyo (Asakusabashi 3-6-6) Photo credit: Devin Yalkin Archive from Performance “Parade 6 — Growth”(2017, National Academy Museum)
