Can a grey environment make you crave more color? ☁️🌈

Since moving to Odense, my life has become quieter, slower and maybe a little greyer.

Meanwhile, my paintings keep getting louder.

I don’t know if we create what surrounds us or what we’re missing, but I’m curious about how much a place can shape our creativity.

Do you think where you live influences the person you become?

Making vibrant art under grey skies, episode 1.

Being a foreigner often feels like a temporary identity that never truly fades. You learn the language, understand the jokes, navigate the streets, rules, seasons, and social norms. You develop routines, friendships, a family, and create a whole life. Yet, a single question, assumption, or brief interaction can suddenly make you feel like an outsider again. Perhaps being foreign isn’t about the duration you’ve spent somewhere but about the realization that you can spend a lifetime making a place feel like home, yet never fully control how others perceive your belonging. This is a conversation we don’t have enough of. Can you ever truly stop being a foreigner?

Meeting new people as an adult is already challenging, and living between cultures can make it even more difficult.

Where can you find others who understand what it’s like to belong to multiple places, or sometimes none fully?

Perhaps we should create those spaces ourselves.

That’s the goal I want to pursue.

I’m so pleased with this, my latest purchase, a poster by the fabulous @4ur3lia. I can’t wait to get it framed and added to my art wall where its vibrant colour will fit in well. Great value , terrific quality and pretty fast delivery too.

The journey on belonging is a long process for those who have been used to live in-between!

Artist Chats : Aurélia Durand
…
@4ur3lia is a French artist, illustrator and author based in Denmark. She illustrated the NYT bestseller “This Book is Anti-Racist” (written by Tiffany Jewell).

Aurelia’s colourful work often explores themes of identity, visibility and connection. In her self-published memoir, “Belonging”, she writes,, “When I started drawing Black women who radiated confidence, joy, and presence, I was not making a statement. I was trying to draw a version of myself I had never fully allowed to exist.”

We chat about her experiences growing up in contrasting cultures, how she tried to fit in, and how she’s creating her own community both online and IRL to find that sense of belonging.

#BlackExcellence #Majorness ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Merçi Ma Poulette @nicegalsasi 😘😘❤️
From @4ur3lia When people think of French history, they often picture a predominantly white narrative. But France’s story is far more diverse and vibrant.

Black individuals have played a vital role in shaping French literature, music, art, cinema, politics, and intellectual life for centuries. Yet, many of their stories remain unspoken, absent from the history France shares and the stories that reach the world.

From Alexandre Dumas to Joseph Bologne, Joséphine Baker, Frantz Fanon, Maryse Condé, Euzhan Palcy, and countless others, Black history is, without doubt, French history.

That’s why this book is so important to me.

Authored by Binkady and Léo and brought to life with my illustrations, it features 40 remarkable Black French figures whose stories deserve to be known far beyond France’s borders.

Though the book is in French, I hope these stories, and my illustrations, can reach far across the globe. 🌍

Understanding France means understanding the Black people who helped shape it.

How many of these names did you already recognize?

I didn't even know there was a #BookstagramCommunity until this year... And even if I was late to the party, I'm glad I made it! This has truly become my favorite corner of the internet!

I love reading everyone's recommendations and reviews 🥰
I love the humor and the aesthetics 💫
I love the encouragement and support 💕
I love the advocacy for literacy and learning 📖
I love that there is still a love for reading 📚

Tell me what are you guys are currently reading? What has been your best read so far this year?

I like to go back forth between a few nonfiction and fiction books, depending on my mood. I'm currently reading:
The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin
Belonging by @4ur3lia
Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America by @michaelharriot
Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey @thenapministry
Seven Days in June by @tiawilliamswrites
Never Tell by @staceyabrams writing as Selena Montgomery

Now how many of these will I finish this month? TBD.... But I predict that I'll finish The Fire Next Time and Seven Days in June.

And it surprises me that I actually finish reading any books with all my back and forth BUT I have finished these 7 so far this year:
Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde (this is my favorite read so far this year!)
Fight Oligarchy by @berniesanders
The Four Agreements by @donmiguelruiz
Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby
Before I Let Go by @kennedyryan1
Our Sister's Keeper by @jasminelholmes
The Seven Daughters of Dupree by Nikesha Elise Williams (forgot to include this on the graphic 🤦🏽‍♀️)
