While touring Aotearoa- New Zealand for 8 weeks releasing @500daysinthewild in cinemas across the country, we live and travel in a 4X4 Toyota pick up truck with a slide on camper. @madcampersnz.
Better then any hotel room! I can't stand being in a room where the windows don't open. Feel like a bird in a cage. Way better to travel like a turtle 🐢 with our home on our backs. This allows us to cook most of our meals and eat in a healthier and more affordable way. But more importantly it also lets us find moments to go hiking and explore the country while working. We try and do daily detours for an hour or two of hiking enroute to our next destination.
New Zealand has great campgrounds when you need to plug in, and DOC ( Department of Conservation) campgrounds off grid.
They also have strict rules against just camping wherever you want to protect the environment. 🙏🏼
Yesterday we left the South Island and now begin the cinema release in the North island. Grateful for the wild spaces and the kind faces we encounter every day. And grateful for our turtle shell we call home for these 8 weeks. 🫶🏽🫶✨ Find the turtle in the photo!

500 DAYS IN THE WILD is showing now at @thegeckotheatre . The audience loved it at the Q+A, and we know you will too.
500 Days In The Wild follows the epic 6-year journey of filmmaker Dianne Whelan as she sets out to reconnect with nature and become the first person to travel the world’s longest trail.

The 24,000 km Trans Canada Trail stretches across the continent of North America, connecting the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific oceans. It is the longest trail in the world. For six years filmmaker Dianne Whelan traveled the entirety of the land and water trails, the only person to ever accomplish this journey. 500 Days in the Wild recounts Dianne’s journey by bike, canoe, skis, snowshoes and on foot and her cross-cultural visits with those who live close to the land.

This feature doc culled from 800 hours of footage is an intricate weave of adventure film, personal reflection and stunning captures of wildlife and landscapes. Using humour, adventure, beautiful cinematography and a great soundtrack (including songs from Joni Mitchell, First Aid Kit, Xavier Rudd, and The Tragically Hip), 500 Days in the Wild will entertain audiences and inspire hope for the future.

She started out alone, disillusioned with state of the world, to look for different ways of caring for the land and for each other. She ended the journey a bit wiser, more hopeful, in love and with a passion to share this story.

Standing in the mist of the Stirling waterfall fed by the 1 million year old Pembrooke glacier in Milford Sound, Aotearoa-New Zealand. The Maori name is Wai Manu.
Legend has it if you get drenched in her mist you emerge 10 years younger. #ancientwaters

Now off to Te Anau for our 8th sold out screening. Feeling blessed by the spirit of Aotearoa with my love.

🎬 WIN 2 TICKETS TO 500 DAYS IN THE WILD!

We’ve got two tickets to give away to see 500 DAYS IN THE WILD + a live Q&A with filmmaker and adventurer Dianne Whelan at State Cinemas Nelson on 13 October.

This is one we’re seriously excited about.

Dianne spent six years travelling the entire 24,000km Trans Canada Trail, the longest trail in the world, by foot, bike, canoe, snowshoe and ski — becoming the first person to complete the full land and water route.

For a woman in her 50s who is not an extreme athlete, it was sometimes gruelling, occasionally harrowing, often exhilarating and always surprising. She started out alone, disillusioned with the state of the world and worried about climate change, to look for different ways of caring for the land and each other. She ended the journey a bit wiser, more hopeful, in love and with a passion to share this story.

The resulting film, 500 DAYS IN THE WILD, is about so much more than one epic adventure.

And even better — Dianne will be in Nelson for a live Q&A after the screening. And she’s such an awesome, inspiring speaker!

TO WIN 2 TICKETS:

🥾 Tag the adventure buddy you’d take with you in the comments

Entries close 12pm Wednesday 7 October.
Winner will be notified by DM.
Entrants accepted on Facebook and Instagram

Can’t wait? Grab your tickets directly from State Cinemas and we’ll see you there!

Due to popular demand, a second Artist-in-Residence voyage has been added.

Following strong interest in the original July 1–9, 2027 departure, filmmaker Dianne Whelan will now join a second small-group expedition to Haida Gwaii aboard the Maple Leaf, departing June 23–July 1, 2027.

Both voyages explore the protected waters of Gwaii Haanas with just eight guests aboard, with Dianne joining as Artist-in-Residence — sharing reflections from her journey behind 500 Days in the Wild along the way.

One guest space currently remains on the July 1–9 voyage.

For those inspired by the film, it’s another opportunity to continue the journey — this time by sea.
