🌸 Cheque delivered. Smiles all around. 💚

Last week we had the honour of presenting 541 Eatery + Exchange with their cheque from our Summer Meeting — $13,600 raised in one hour by 100+ women who care deeply about this community.

541 Eatery + Exchange is more than a café, it’s a place of belonging, employment, and dignity for people facing barriers. We are so proud to support the incredible work you do for Hamilton 🙌

Thank you to every member who showed up, voted, and donated. This is what collective giving looks like 💚

Every Tuesday at noon, GOHOP staff and friends gather for Common Prayer in the prayer room and online.

This year, we are inviting friends from charities, organizations, and churches to join us so that we can pray with them and for them.

This week, we welcomed 541 Eatery and Exchange. It was a joy and privilege to pray for their important work in this city.

Please join us in praying for them. Their prayer needs are in the second photo.

You can support their ministry simply by being present in their space, meeting friends there, or enjoying a cup of coffee and something from their new menu.

We will be joining them for another 541 Prayer Gathering on November 9. Please be part of it.

The side door at @541barton was clean when we finished our round on Barton on Thursday 3 September. By early Friday morning it wasn't.

The 541 team found it first. With Labour Day weekend in between, our next day on that block was Tuesday the 8th, and we saw it the moment we walked up. We told our friends there the same thing we'd tell any neighbour on this street: the day we have the supplies, it's gone.

The supplies came in on Thursday the 10th. But this is a working café with a door people actually need, so instead of blocking it off mid-service we came back on Friday the 11th, when the staff could cover it.

We've blurred the tag. Whoever put it there doesn't get an audience out of it.

Thanks to @barton_village for the supplies, and to our friends at 541 for the patience.

🏒 OFF THE WALL | Pass the Puck Forward at Pace's Takeout and Catering

Today, I met with Steve Karalis, the founder of the Pass the Puck Forward initiative, at Pace's Takeout and Catering, and honestly, this initiative is absolutely incredible.

It's a small idea doing something really beautiful for this community.

Here's how it works: you buy a puck for a dollar, no minimum, no maximum.

That puck goes in a jar on the counter, and anyone can redeem a puck toward their meal, no questions asked.

There's something magical about this generosity of strangers, people who bought a puck for someone they'll never meet, just because they could.

You can redeem up to six pucks per person per day.

Steve told me the idea was inspired by and initiative he experienced at 541 Eatery and Exchange, a non-profit cafe in Hamilton doing a similar thing with buttons in jars.

He went last fall, fell in love with it, bought 20 buttons on the spot, and just sat there watching people come and go, buying and redeeming, and it clicked for him.

He knew Brantford needed something like it too.

Right now there are five participating businesses:

Pace's Takeout and Catering,
Mercasa Little Italy Eatery,
Maria's Pizza West,
Sweet Bakery,
Altitude Coffee Roasters

It's running for the entire month of September, and if this community shows up for it the way I think it will, it might just stick around even longer.

Pass the Puck Forward, Brantford.

Have you grabbed a puck yet?

Let me know in the comments!
