Beyond honored to make this list @iupedu has a storied football tradition. Talent alone isn’t enough, you have to be a special kind of individual to make it here. There is a certain kind of mindset one must develop. Bigger, stronger, faster is only one part of the whole. You must be mentally stronger as well. One must study the game like a general studies military tactics, ”Know thy self and know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories” Your will must be unbreakable, b/c you will be tested by fire. Competition is king here, any given practice can be harder then any game you play in. “Iron sharpens iron” and you find that out immediately on that practice field. At Iup we don’t just train to beat the team across from us, but to break their will. That mindset is cultivated long before the season opening coin toss.
In football there is a game within a game. The OFFENSIVE LINE. Oline consist of 5 players who must play as one. W/o a good front line there can be no success. Olines don’t just drive people off the ball, but drive the culture of any team. That’s the origins of Iup’s success and over the past 2 decades their olines have been lead by 1 man, Mike Campolo. All of those qualities I spoke on being a necessary part of being a part of this organization, Coach Camp is the cultivator of that mindset. He is the engine of the car that is @iupfootball w/o him Iup isnt Iup. W/o him, Dan Matha wouldn’t be Dan Matha. Not just as an athlete but as a man. Everything he taught me on that field/film room are all things I took with me into my life. I wouldn’t be able to receive this honor if it wasn’t for him, he believed in me and gave me an opportunity during a time when no one was, or would. I’ll forever be indebted to that man. I could go on for another 67 pages about him but this will do for now. To every teammate I ever played with know that I’m grateful for being able to share the field with you, to fight towards a common goal, to know win, lose, or draw you all had my back. We pushed each other to our limits. We built bonds that transcended the game. I thank all of you for the roles you played in my life. Much love to every single one of you.
