The Latin Academy had another incredible AVENTURA! For Hispanic heritage month our little NO SABO community took a road trip to perfect little theatre in Babylon, Long Island…to grab eats and mainly to see a production of “GET ON YOUR FEET” the story or Latin pop stars Gloria & Emilio Estefan. We felt all the feels; laughed, cried, danced and OMG fell in love with this story and cast’s energy..so authentic and inviting. Gracias to the everyone who made this happen! Another one for the books!

Special love to @manuela.mango_ for showing The Latin Academy so much love...not just at the show, but through her actions of community support, youth empowerment and cariño for nuestra gente ...the Latino/e communities ❤️

The Latin Academy, NYC's mission is to educate younger generations about the complex beauty of Latino heritage and give them a strong sense of belonging...through language, food, music, art and history. Our "aventuras" are mobile classroom explorations of out lessons....and hay Dios mío we have fun!

It TOOK a village..

Community doesn’t just happen. The Latin Academy, NYC…4 years in the making…minus the COVID years. And lets not forget the many years prior envisioning a way where we can celebrate our families, Spanish language and Latino culture…when our native homes in Latin America are so far. :(

Pero lo logramos…little by little, day by day, and we have managed to start to see the results of our passion. Especially on September 13th celebrando nuestros Abuelos.

No venue, no problem. Lo hacemos en mi casa!

No budget, no problem. Que todos traigan un plato de comida.

No DJ, no problem. Que venga papi, el tío, mi hija, la vecina y tocamos algo.

Lluvia!!?? no problem, Dios nos va cuidar.

And behind it all is the love, patience and voluntad that our elders- our abuelos- instilled in us. You dont need much cuando hay buena onda y ganas de disfrutar.

Gracias to our growing little village for coming together for our first annual Dia de los Abuelos…which is an official American holiday “Grandparents Day”, yet I’ve never celebrated it until this year. I think next year we might need a bigger space porque it was lit.

Muchas gracias to our village, our abuelos, our latino homecooyks, our madres that keep the family together, our children who rise our spirits.

And Diosito lindo for stopping the rain just in time, and for all the blessings.

Sunday September 13th was National Grandparents Day, but we believe our abuelos deserve to be celebrated even more! ❤️

@latinacademynyc wanted to make sure our elders know just how important they are in keeping our traditions, culture, stories, and family values alive. 🫶🏽

This year marked the first of many
“ Día de Los Abuelos” celebrations filled with boleros, música en vivo, comida casera preparada by our very own families, and most importantly, lots of love. ❤️👵🏽👴🏽

I’m so proud to share the work that we all dedicated so much time and energy into creating. Thank you all so much for your patience and for putting so much love into this project.

I have directed multiple films over the past 5 years and it never felt like the right time. The truth is there is never a perfect time for anything. So stop hiding your work! The time is NOW the day is TODAY. Stay tuned to see more clips from the film. Let me know what you think!
