It’s over 20 days into the month and I haven’t really* drawn anything in October. It’s an interesting thing to admit as someone who quite literally makes a living from drawing and lettering.

But it’s actually been pretty intentional as I’ve been taking a bit of a break from my typical client work while also working on some pretty fun and special things.

Last Friday, I co-hosted the Kernference Watch Party in Chicago with Adobe’s @creativeclub_us and @goodtype. We had over 20 creatives join us for a day of learning and connecting.

*And while I say I haven’t *really* drawn anything — I did draw on some calligraphy worksheets during Friday’s workshop and I’ve kept up with my daily sketchbook paintings. Does that count? I’m sure it does for some and not for others.

Thank you to @___kamera for co-hosting with me, Amanda for supporting from NY while @caity.burke is away, and @jessnicole_visuals for capturing this group shot and content throughout the day. And all of my design friends - new and old - who showed up and made the day so special.

This month has been filled with Adobe things from my very first @adobelive stream to this watch party to speaking on a panel at the School of the Art Institute last night to a lecture to a class at Columbia College Chicago this Friday.

Aside from the Adobe work (that I still can’t believe I have the opportunity and privilege to do), I’ve been making good on my personal promise to invest in my growing Chicago souvenir collection.

I’ve also been enjoying the true perks of small business ownership like taking naps, going on walks, being able to schedule unexpected health appointments in the middle of the day, visiting family out of state, and sleeping in!

If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading my little journal entry as to what this atypical October has looked like for me. I love how each month is different and am so lucky to make time to reflect and enjoy the creative life that I’m so intentionally trying to build for myself.

About 4 Mondays ago, I recorded my first hour long standup comedy show. Super grateful for this experience and it’s only UP from here. I’ve been waiting on all my pictures to make a post, but looks like I won’t be getting them (😂😩😭), so I’m making lemonade lol
.
Fun fact, Eddie Murphy also recorded his first special “Delirious” on August 17th. The date was already anointed, unbeknownst to me! ♥️🙏🏾

Triplets, am I right? Mommie and baby brother ♥️

Some of my fammm! This is definitely an “in-between smiles” photo, but this is the only one that I have of us from the night sooo…

My girl Amakie!!! Could you have predicted comedy for me in 2009? 😂♥️🤞🏾

My cousin surprised meee! Tierra came from Houstonnn ♥️😘 (again, an in-between smiles shot, but we move 🤷🏾‍♀️)

Donté!!! My boyyyy!!! Always down to clown! Love you ♥️ Thank you A&T ! 🤞🏾

The Reynolds-Tyler’s!!! Ahhhh BIG loveeee!!! LINK Unlimited been supporting me since I was 14. A true village, okayyy!?

Tiffanie!!! Thank you sooo much for pulling uppp!! One of the first few tickets I sold was to YOU! 🤞🏾♥️

The person who introduced me to Dorian’s!! Kamerin! Our random girls night out in April birthed my first special! God be moving! ♥️🙏🏾

I had to be 4 or 5 in this poster photo. And that girl is LIVINGGGG for me on stage right now lol So much of life really is about reconnecting with your inner child who is often the truest version of yourself. Feels good to make HER proud. 🥹♥️😘

Trying to limit ourselves to one title is a creative project. But we don’t have to when we’re with @creativeclub_us ✨

A space to be our full multi-hypenate creative selves. 😇

Had a great convo with @studio.jordy about how we plan our outfits when we attend events. He said:

1) Energy of the room — whose there dictates the creativity of the fit.
2) What the event type — dictate fabrics & pairings
3) What’s going to make me feel confident — what our vibe

Thanks for the invite @creativeclub_us ✨ Excited to bring more creative events to our creator community!
