For centuries, wrought iron has been shaped by hand into some of the most beautiful details in architecture. Blacksmiths would heat, hammer, bend and twist the metal into gates, balconies, railings, staircases and intricate decorative pieces, giving each one a character that mass-produced materials simply couldn’t replicate. By the 18th and 19th centuries, wrought iron had become a defining part of architectural ironwork across Europe and beyond.

Maybe that’s what makes it so beautiful even now. A wrought-iron balcony, an old gate or a simple railing can add so much character without needing to be the centre of attention. Strong but delicate, practical but incredibly decorative, it’s one of those materials that only seems to get better with age.
