The last day of 48... the hardest year of my life to date. 💔

While Dad wasn't doing well, this time last year, I didn't think we would lose him so soon, despite his, and our, best efforts. After his catastrophic fall, and subsequent heart attack, I found myself in the ICU again, shaking, as I told the nurses to enforce his DNR. I stood with my little family, as he took his last breath, and my heart broke into a million pieces.

But life doesn't stop, does it? This year definitely taught me that, in good ways & bad. The lows have been subterranean, the highs have made my heart burst with joy--color, through the grey. TinyMom moved into our house, we have been purging a lifetime of memories & possessions... but then, we got to spend time in Oceanside, hug our friends at @az_cocktailweek, adopt our sweet kitties, travel to Chicago & NOLA, and enjoy dinners & drinks with friends near & far from home. It hasn't been easy for any of us, but I am grateful that we have figured out some semblance of balance between the highs & lows, together. Thank you to you all for being there for me, reaching out to spend time together, share a meal, a hug, or laughter & tears. While grief is incredibly personal, I am so thankful I haven't felt alone through it all. 🫶🏾🥰

Tomorrow will be the first birthday that I won't hear my father singing "Happy Birthday" to me, either in person, or over the phone, and I am bracing myself (as I sit here, typing on my phone, weeping). They say that the firsts are the hardest, and I'm not sure I'm ready.

(Sorry if I didn't tag you, IG only allows 20!)

Kicked off #juneteenth weekend celebrations with an incredible dinner at @little_rituals_bar last Thursday, with esteemed Black chefs, @lasgidicafephx, @ll_chefd, & @chefstephenjones, presented by @hennessy!

The food & cocktail pairings were incredible, the music on-point, and the vibes were immaculate. It was a joyous celebration of food & freedom for all, and I am so glad the wonderful team at Little Rituals helped it all come together for the second year!

Why is Juneteenth important? While the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order that declared the freedom of all enslaved people in Confederate states, was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War... it took 2.5 years for freedom to actually reach all enslaved people. Juneteeth is celebrated on June 19, when in 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the enslaved people there were free—more than TWO YEARS after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The holiday also serves as a time to recognize the resilience, achievements, and ongoing struggle for equality for Black Americans. ❤️💚🖤

Cheers!
