South Florida Artists Scale Up for Orlando Museum’s Florida Prize
Written By Michelle F. Solomon

A trio of vibrant pyramids, built from almost 100 canvases, tower from floor to ceiling. Photographs explore motherhood and the American landscape. A bed of dried rose petals bears the imprint of a body. Walls are covered in hand-drawn sacred symbols. A pink installation of sculptures made of goat’s milk soap is built around intimacy and well-being.

One gallery after another at the Orlando Museum of Art belongs to a Miami-Dade County artist in this year’s Florida Prize in Contemporary Art, making the state’s premier contemporary art exhibition feel unexpectedly close to home for Miami audiences.

Eight of the exhibition’s 12 artists and artist duos have South Florida ties, including Miami artist Francisco Masó, whose “The Coronation of Gladiolus” received the exhibition’s $20,000 top prize.

It has been a little over a week since the opening of the 2026 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art at @orlandomuseumofart. The exhibition opened on May 30 and remains on view through August 30, 2026.

Congratulations to all the participating artists, whose presentations are outstanding and make for a compelling exhibition! The Florida Prize continues to be one of our favorite annual exhibitions. Bringing together artists from across the state, it serves as a valuable survey of the many voices, perspectives, and thematic explorations currently shaping contemporary art in Florida.

Congratulations to Francisco Maso @fcomaso for being the winner of the @orlandomuseumofart Florida Prize in Contemporary Art 2026! 👏👏👏

Francisco Masó (b. Havana, Cuba, 1988) presents
‘The Coronation of the Gladiolus’ (2026), a site specific Installation of paintings, folding screen, flags, paper chains, acoustic panels, sound, and musical instruments.

“… the artist has created an immersive environment inspired by Cuban public demonstrations. Initially, the installation appears celebratory, even carnivalesque, with bright, bold colors. Purple walls painted in an intense “Quixotic plum” hue, warm midday lighting, an immersive musical score, and staging evoke a festival or public ceremony. However, beneath this theatrical surface, a more sinister reality emerges: repression has entered the scene. Overhead, striped flags and paper chains hang like banners and latent reminders of oppression, while the artist’s paintings-reminders of covert officers -punctuate the scene.”

The Florida Prize in Contemporary Art 2026 is curated by Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon @coralieccg, The Dr. James Cottrell and Mr. Joseph Lovett Chief Curator, and Katherine Page @__katherineep__, Associate Curator, Orlando Museum of Art.

The 2026 Florida Prize award juror was Jade Powers, The Hugh Kaul Curator of Contemporary Art, Birmingham Museum of Art, AL.
