After driving around the park for 3 hours watching snow stick to the pine trees, even though it’s nearly July, we rolled into this spot and I knew exactly the shot I wanted to get. After scrambling down through the very slippery granite slabs and pine roots I immediately saw what seemed like an infinite amount of West-Slope Cutthroat eating emerging caddis and golden stones in the deepest pool.

Almost every cast delivered a stunning cutthroat that disappeared back into the deep, blue, cold water effortlessly. These fish never cease to amaze me and the places they bring me will always keep me chasing them. Whether it’s 20 miles in the backcountry or a highway-side pool like this one, there’s always a fish that makes me stunned.

This will definitely go down as my wettest and coldest day I’ve ever had on the water. The wind was a steady 10 miles an hour which seemed to occasionally turn the rain into sleet for small periods of time. My @patagonia_flyfish puffer was very quickly soaked all the way to my under-layers which I will say definitely did not help me stay warm.

As I walked back to shore I couldn’t feel my feet underneath me and my @sonyalpha camera was covered in water. I hope the next time I’m here I don’t need to wear three layers just to still get cold. Till next time Yellowstone.

It’s been one year since I almost died. I now come back to the mountain where it happened and face it with gratitude alongside the community who’s led me through this. Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way. You all have taught me that recovery is about being ready for whats to come and spending it with those you love. -Charlie Lin

What was expected to be a story of recovery became something else entirely.

A story of becoming.

Of joy. Dedication. Passion. Love.

All held together by a community.

Charlie’s journey has connected me to Mammoth in ways I didn’t expect. The locals, ski patrol, families, and once strangers - now friends.

Healing happens in community, and these mountains were always a part of that story.

Grateful doesn’t begin to cover it.

Winter’s almost here and what a season of transformation it’s been. Charlie my son’s TBI (Brain health) documentary in progress, the most important story/film I’ve ever been apart of. Bringing all I learned in a life spent searching for ancient wisdom to his recovery, and finding deep healing in our human connection to nature. The best part is still yet to come, Act 3 starting. « Where does the brain end and the mind begin ».
