The Ascended ✨

I fear that there’s something wrong with me because while I definitely had fun with this one, I felt like it wasn’t the 5 star I was hoping for. The start was strong and picked up quite quickly. I mean, within the first 50 pages, I was already DISTRAUGHT. But then in between the trials, I felt like there was, like Duskbound, nothing and everything all at once. The lore of the Primordials and the history of the Twelve felt overwhelming for me, I’ll be honest. In saying that, I still had such a good time with this one!

We follow the story of twin blessed children, Thais and Thatcher, focusing mainly from Thais’ POV. We get a glimpse of Thatcher’s POV here and there which are a godsend. Thais has been hiding her power to avoid the Trials of Ascension, but when she is exposed, she is forced to train and survive deadly trials in order for her to “ascend” to a higher being.

What I thoroughly enjoyed were the trials. In the span of 600+ pages, there were 4 trials that were well-described and absolutely gripping. I felt like I was immersed in the trials as part of the audience because of how well they were written. I also really enjoyed the company of Marx, Aelix and Kyren as they all (literally) fought for survival. The main highlight of this book was Thatcher and his ability to switch from being the sarcastic, funny brother, to the hot, brooding and protective MAN. I cannot speak higher of him if I tried.

In all honesty, Thais is no standout FMC to me. It was hard for me to connect with her, and found myself connecting with Thatcher and the other side characters more. I feel like it didn’t take long for the enemies to become lovers because of how infatuated Thais was with Xul and that’s where I felt the lack of chemistry between the two for me.

📖: burn of the everflame by @authorpenncole

6⭐️ a masterpiece, but at what cost 🥲

this book was worth every second of the wait.

at 1000ish pages, it’s obviously quite thick, however the pacing was so well done that i never once felt like the plot was dragging as it was filled with so much action.

i loved how much the world expanded in this book. building on the magic, politics, and different realms we’ve seen throughout the series, the added kindred lore made all the pieces come together to make this feel like such a massive conclusion to the story.

emotionally, i was put through the wringer as it felt like there was absolutely no peace to be found. while i was stressed and sick for most of the book, the last stretch especially had me staring at a wall and questioning when i would ever feel happy again.

the way penn writes complex characters is something to be studied. she had my feelings on a rollercoaster as i went from hating them to loving them (except luther, he’s always been perfect xx), and the way she used the additional character povs to maximize the emotional damage was diabolical.

luther corbois has always held a spot in my top 5 fantasy book boyfriends, but i fear this book now has him stealing first place. we already knew this man yearns, but actually seeing how painfully devoted to diem he is from his perspective??? incredible.

what an ending to this journey — i can’t believe it’s over. i’m nowhere near ready to say goodbye to these characters, but what a privilege it was to get to experience their story 🤍

This summer I discovered the yearning 👌🏽

Top 3 highlights:
1. I discovered the yearning Queen - Tahereh Mafi - aka MOTHER MAFI - so I read 17 of her books
2. I randomly discovered Blood & Betrayals, Avalon University- buddy read it with @jamrreads and somehow got lucky enough to get on the @r0seandstar ARC team. I didn’t even know that my fave Amber V Nicole was besties with Jeanette Rose and Alexis Rune, and now I am a chaos gremlin with some of my best book besties
3. Another random find - obsessed with the audiobook - Web of Vows and Vengeance and can’t and won’t shut up about it @ariaashbrookauthor
