This video was taken in an informal camp settlement in Mafraq, Jordan back in 2017. From afar, Syrian refugees could see the power plant in their home country. Even as Syrians return to their homeland, many homes were destroyed by a decade of civil war and violence. An estimated $216 billion is needed to rebuild Syria.

Displacement is nothing new. New displacements still occur on a daily basis. Some refugees can never return home; they continue to live in transit countries that deem them "illegal" and undesirable. Like you and I, refugees deserve kindness and acceptance, the opportunity to live, work, grow and learn wherever they are.

This and every World Refugee Day, let's continue to call for the dignified and humane treatment of refugees and displaced persons, starting from you and I, and spread this message loud and clear. Anti-migrant and refugee sentiment has no place in our society and collective consciousness - be a louder voice to shape the narrative.

As World Refugee Day approaches, we look at refugee awareness, public understanding, and the conversations that shape how we see those beyond our immediate frame of reference.

Recently in Singapore, we joined a meaningful fireside chat on “Bridging the Education Gap for Displaced Children,” co-organised by @_afrsg and =Dreams Asia.

Our founder, Deborah Henry, shared what first sparked her journey , meeting refugee children in Kuala Lumpur who, despite being close to the city, had no access to education.
Safe, yet unable to read, write, or even dream.

Alongside fellow panellists, the conversation went beyond policy, highlighting a deeper truth: education is not just access, but dignity, hope, and possibility.
Today, thousands of refugee children in Malaysia still grow up without formal education, but through community efforts and collaboration, change is possible.

This work continues because it must. No child should grow up without a future they can see for themselves.

"Tell our story", Salemul said that to me 11 years ago. He became displaced with his younger brother across Southeast Asia, then they took on the seas across to Australia where we met.

I stumbled on 'First, They Erased Our Name' by Habiburahman with Sophie Ansel at a neighbourhood library. The same phrase was inked in Habib's dedication.

This message is simple but important, for the stateless Rohingya people around the world. @_afrsg
