We had the pleasure of meeting this young man, Zion Ali, a talented Youth Empowerment Artist, back in February during a speaking engagement where Dr. Wheeler Parker was the guest speaker at ITT. Zion performed at that event, and his presence left a lasting impression.

He and his booking manager, Marshall, shared their intention to return and support the commemoration—and they stayed true to their word.

We truly enjoyed Zion’s presence and his performance once again. The song he sang was absolutely perfect—so fitting for such a meaningful occasion, as we honored and celebrated what would have been Emmett Till’s 84th birthday.

What a powerful and emotional speech from Ollie Gordon, cousin of Emmett Till and mother of the late Airicka Gordon .Ollie spoke from the heart about her daughter’s legacy. Airicka was a dedicated historian and truth-teller who worked timelessly to ensure that Emmett Till’s story was never forgotten. She was passionate, persistent, and purposeful in everything she did to preserve the legacy of Emmett and Mamie Till-Mobley. Before her passing, she passed the torch to Dr. Marvel Parker who now continues this sacred work. 68 years ago today, on August 28, 1955 -- 14 year old #blackboy
#emmetttill was KIDNAPPED, TORTURED, and brutally murdered in Money Mississippi while visiting his family.

It was reported that his assailants -- made Emmett carry a 75 - pound cotton gin fan to the bank of the Tallahatchie River and ordered him to take off his clothes. The two men then beat him nearly to death, gouged out his eye, shot him in the head, and then threw his body, tied to the cotton gin fan barbed wire, into the river.

Three days later, his corpse was recovered but was so disfigured that Mose Wright could only identify it by an initialed ring.

Authorities wanted to bury his body quickly, but Emmett Till's mother, Mamie Till Mobley, requested it be sent back to Chicago. In that -- Mama Mamie insisted on having an open - casket--- so that all the world could see what racist murderers had done to her only son.

Today is a very emotional yet Empowering day as we honor Emmett Till, his life and his legacy --

His heinous death inspired what we know as " The Civil Rights Movement " that I'm a #Proud daughter of.

My father, the late great Rev. Dr. Kwame John R. Porter was the First SCLC ( Southern Christian Leadership Conference ) President for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a Charter member of Operation Breadbasket -- the National Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

With the Congressional passing of the Emmett Till Anti Lynching Act, I have been thinking about my introduction into the Till family and how it came about.
On April 28th, 2013, I received a call from Airickca Gordan Taylor, who was cousin to #EmmettTill and executive director of Mamie Till Mobley Foundation.
@_airickca_ had heard about my 13 yr old daughter, #VictoriaPannell, childhood activism and thought she could be helpful in bringing awareness to rapper Lil Wayne’s disrespectful reference to Emmett Till lyrically in one of his songs. Airickca wanted Mountain Dew and it’s parent company PepsiCo to drop endorsement of Lil Wayne and sponsorship of his tour. Victoria went on a social media blitz and wrote emails to PepsiCo. A few days later, PepsiCo sent a late night email to Victoria informing her of their decision to sever ties with Lil Wayne including tour sponsorship. The next day PepsiCo made the announcement public. Very few people know this story, including people close to Victoria. Soon after this victory, Victoria went on a 4 day speaking engagement with Airickca and #WheelerParker, cousin to Emmett Till and sole survivor from the scene of Emmett’s kidnapping. God is. I would like to invite you into a moment of history. Yesterday was powerful and reignited my reason to continue fighting for authentic justice in arenas typically not seen connected to equity and equality. Mama Ollie Gordon invited me to a special ceremony honoring the lives of Emmett Till, Mamie Till-Mobley, and my dear sister-friend, Airickca Gordon-Taylor.
There was representation from political and prolific leaders to the family of Oscar Grant. More importantly, there was representation of history and love, resilinece and strength.

14 year old Emmett Till was the catalyst that started the Civil Right Movement and his mother Mamie Till Mobley is the mother of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1955, Emmett traveled to Greenwood, MS from Chicago. He was beaten to death for whistling at a white woman. His body was so badly beaten that his mother could recognize him. Her decision to put his disfigured body on display for the world to see gave others courage to take a stand and fight against racism.

On this day in 1941, you came in a cold cruel world. And in 1955, you celebrated your last birthday with your mother #MamieTill little did we know that you would take the Illinois Central down to Money, Ms. And become the spark that started the Civil Rights Movement with your senseless murder over a whistle that never happened. Although your killers went free, their lives were spent in Misery and are awaiting judgement. We saw how your mother's strength when she endured the negative threats that were made against her. We saw how she had to endure when a racist U. S. Senator from Mississippi tried to dig up your husband's army records and try to use it to justify your son's murder. We saw what you had to endure when they made their confession in Look Magazine. And we saw what you endured when one of the murderers complained that why can't your son stay dead. But he can't stay dead. He is memorialized by singers. Writers and actors like #JamesBaldwin, #GwendolynBrooks, #SimeonBooker, #FranklinMcMahon #EmmylouHarris and #LewisNordan. Emmett's voice is crying for those who were cut down senselessly and too soon.

She was the cousin of #EmmettTill, she dedicated her life to keeping his legacy alive and in that, created her own legacy. She was a committed activist with a heart of courage and a smile that could light up any room. Wish I could’ve gave her more flowers while she was living, but I will honor and uplift the life and legacy of Airicka Gordon Taylor (@_airickca_ ) with the rest of her loved ones and the many lives she touched. We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Airickca Gordon-Taylor, the cousin of #EmmettTill and Mamie Till Mobley, and executive director of the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation. Mrs. Gordon-Taylor was a tireless advocate and fighter for justice and civil rights. We were pleased to have Mrs. Gordon-Taylor and her mother, Ollie, as guests of honor at the 2019 ceremony for the unveiling of the Graball Landing sign. Mrs. Gordon-Taylor's unwavering commitment to keep the legacies of Emmett and Mamie alive will never be forgotten. We send our deepest condolences to the family.
